Mel Gibson has been sentenced to 16 hours of community service for spousal battery. Gibson, who has made media headlines for his outrageous behavior, rude phone messages, and ranting tirades, will be doing his community service for his estranged wife's charity, Mending Kids International.

Robyn Gibson previously served as the President of the Board of Directors for Mending Kids International, a program that "provides life-changing surgical care to children worldwide." Her term as President was up in December 2010 but she is in charge of the Malibu branch of Mending Kids.

Robyn has been separated from Mel since 2006, when they ended a 26 year marriage. She has been his ex-wife since 2009 when they both filed for divorce citing "irreconcilable differences" as the main reason. The "Braveheart" star soon became involved with Oksana Grigorieva shortly after his divorce and had a little girl with Grigorieva on Oct. 30, 2009 but it wasn't all a fairytale for the couple.

Mel and Oksana were soon slapping restraining orders on each other with one claim by Grigorieva of domestic violence against her and the child. Police investigated the domestic violence issues in July 2010 and that is what led Mel to his 16-hour community service stint.

The 55 year old "Mad Max" star plead 'no contest' to the misdemeanor charges of spousal battery and has been sentenced to 16 hours of community service, 52 weeks of domestic violence and mental health counseling and three years informal probation. According to The Sun , Gibson's lawyer said the actor, "accepted the plea deal to avoid a prolonged court fight." That and his 'no contest' plea cannot be held against him in any future cases since it is not considered an admission of guilt.

The star who said in a heated tirade to Oskana, "You look like a f****** pig in heat. If you get raped by a pack of n******, it will be your fault." , will now be helping children in dire need of surgeries for congenital heart disease, scoliosis, significant cranial facial deformities, and other transformative surgeries. It is unclear in what capacity the star is expected to perform his community service sentence. It could be visiting with children, fundraising or raising awareness about the charity but it is all speculation right now.

Mel seems to have gone off the rails. Wonder...are he and Charlie Sheen hanging out?

It seems he would hurt fund-raising.

    Interesting approach to punishment.
