Mel Gibson: Will Cussing at a Reporter Affect His Career?

Mary Thatcher
It wasn't that long ago when Mel Gibson made the national news for making bigoted statements about the Jews after being arrested on suspected drunk driving charges. In August of 2006 he was pulled over by Deputy James Mee for the suspected DUI when Gibson refused to comply with Mee's request to get into the police car (one can only guess if Gibson was sober enough to hand the policeman his car registration and insurance card, which is regular procedure). Out of the blue, Gibson asked Mee if he was Jewish, then Gibson proceeded to go into one of his infamous anti-Semitic tirades. His own father Hutton was just as anti-Semitic, which no doubt tells one exactly where Mel learned this inclination from. Yet as with Hutton, Mel is a devout Sedevacantist Catholic, which means that neither recognize the Second Vatican Council of 1962. Being of the Traditionalist Catholic denomination certainly has not prevented the Gibsons from acting out as true Christians at times although in this case, their religious beliefs are considered to precede anything else commonly associated with Christianity, such as the sola scriptura school of Christian theology.

This time, Mel is interviewed by a reporter at WGN in Chicago promoting his new film "Edge of Darkness" when the interviewer, Dean Richards, asks him about his recent past. PopEater reports the story and provides a link to the video showing Mel cussing under his breath at Richards right at the very end of the interview. It wasn't just the 2006 drunk driving incident Richards refers to, rather, but also alludes to Mel's recent divorce and much younger lover, which has also made the news. Perhaps Mel is seen as being testy at the interview, not liking what he is being asked, when he tells Richards that he has moved on, while the media obviously hasn't. But the media does not quickly forget, and neither does the general public, when such incidences make the news. Most people probably do not really care what goes on in Gibson's life, and fans tend to be more forgiving. But was it really necessary for Mel to call Richards a vulgar name as he did in this interview?

Some people might regard this action as not being a very good reflection of his religious beliefs. After all, being a Sedevacantist Catholic means that one has to live the right life, adhere strictly to the old Roman Catholic church rulings, even though one can certainly go to confession later on to repent of one's sins. It is hard to imagine Mel sitting in the confessional behind the curtain as he tells the priest he called an entertainment reporter a cuss word. All he would have to do is say the required number of rosary prayers for absolution and make a strong attempt not to make the same mistake again in the future. But that remains to be seen, since Mel appears to be not much better than the average Jerry Springer show guests. Chances are this new incident will not harm his career too much. Mel might be able to get away with his pretty face and mediocre Hollywood talents, but he has nothing to cry about; he will just laugh his way to the bank with his earnings from "Edge of Darkness."
