Mel Gibson's Church is Application Only

Jesus Loved Everybody, but Mel Ain't Having It

Mel Gibson's church avoids the open door policy of most every other Catholic and/or Christian church. If you want to attend Mel Gibson's church you must fill out an application first, according to Radaronline.com. The application for Gibson's Holy Family Chapel clearing states that it is not an "open place of worship."

Why would Mel Gibson's church require an application?

Mel Gibson was raised Catholic. The debate as to whether or not Catholics are Christians rages on. However, whether Gibson's church is considered a Catholic church, a Christian church, or both, most Catholic and Christian churches have an open door policy. Although those who wish to take communion need to be baptized in the faith, the doors are rarely closed to those who would like to sit in the chapel and join the services.

With Gibson forcing a person to fill out an applicant to join his church, he turns his church into a private club, and many would argue that there is nothing Catholic or Christian about that. One could argue that if the goal is to offer faith to everyone, the doors would not be closed. However, if Mel's attitude is that only those who share the same views are welcome, and everyone else is not, even if they are interested in the faith, he has created a closed door situation that says, "We're better than you, and you don't belong."

Since Mel Gibson's church is not open to everyone, can Mel afford yet another stain on his resume?

Mel Gibson has had a colorful past since his days as a Lethal Weapon star. His The Passion of the Christ received strong reviews, but was criticized by some for being anti-Semitic. Matters got even worse for Mel Gibson when he was pulled over for driving drunk and then went on an anti-Semitic tirade against the police officer who arrested him. Not only has Gibson struggled with alcohol, but he had a baby out of wedlock with Oksana Grigorieva, which some Catholics and Christians disapprove of.

It is highly likely that with Mel Gibson's church not being open to everyone, and Mel Gibson requiring an application to join his church, that his church will be strongly criticized by non-church goers. Many will see a church that calls itself "holy" as anything but. However, perhaps more importantly, the church is also likely to be criticized by those who attend church regularly. Many Catholics/Christians would not approve of a closed door policy because it is against what the faiths stand for.

why anyone would defend this jackhole is beyond me. Mel gibson is spoiled goods.

Mel Gibson is not an individual who should be setting himself up as a representative of any Catholic or Christian church or organization. His strong and hateful anti-Semitic, racist, anti-women and anti-Gay comments are all on record. He is divorced and has a child out of wedlock (both looked down on by the Catholic Church). A private, exclusive church with millions of dollars of assets, and where women are restricted as to what they are allowed to wear sounds like just the sort of place a crazy, self-obsessed, and mean-spirited movie star would build to prop up his own self worship. Gibson needs help. He probably needs psychiatric help, medical help as well as spiritual help. Unfortunately, he probably won't find it in the church he built for himself.

Uh...I'm not a pornographer. I'm an erotica writer. But it's all the same to prudes. LOL

I find it as no surprise that the author of this article is a pornographer. The hypocrisy is that she speaks critically of Mel's decision to keep his church private (most likely for security) and then acts as if she is some great judge of morality, totally ignoring her immoral career choice.

just don't join his club. there are plenty of real churches.

well, it own't hurt my feelings. I don't think I'd really want to go to church with Mel anyway :-0

  • Jolie du Pre 11/23/2009

There's nothing admirable about a "private church."

  • Joseph Huberts 11/21/2009

Jane, you're right. And a lot of devout Catholics are learning about Sedevacantism too, which really does explain what happened to society (and the Church) over the last 40 years: pervert "priests" and all that. Gibson has been slandered even by the so-called "traditionalist" Catholic press, who as you note see fit to print rumors about his private life as bad as anti-Catholic bastions like TMZ or Entertainment Tonight!
