We knew then that his allergies were out of control. We asked several doctors about what could be causing his allergies and we were told the same thing over and over again - food allergies. One of pediatricians said he was most likely allergic to ascorbic acid (vitamin c), others said eggs, sugar, dairy and wheat were the cause of his allergies. So we fought diligently to no avail. As a breast-feeding mom, it broke my heart to think that the things I was eating were causing these horrible allergies. I eliminated so many things from my diet, that I became sick myself with anemia. Although we saw mild improvements to his allergies, there was not enough evidence to conclude that any one food was causing them. He was still covered in eczema, never slept more than 45 minutes at a time because his allergies were keeping him up. He also had a constant cough and runny nose.
Finally when Hadley was 3 years old, we took him in to a new pediatrician who diagnosed him with asthma, eczema, and indoor/outdoor allergies. He was put on Zyrtec, Cingulair, Ellidel and Benedryl. This pediatrician said that there is a common misconception that these are all separate conditions, but the truth is, these allergies are all connected and triggered by the same things - environmental offenders within the home. We tried those prescriptions and OTC drugs for about 2 weeks. The Cingulair gave Hadley horrible night terrors, Ellidel was given the black box warning because of a link to cancer and I had serious concerns with putting a toddler on a daily allergy regimen. I knew there had to be a better way.
So I asked my doctor specifically what the indoor allergies could be. He gave me the following advice:
Eczema - Something touching his skin was causing an allergic reaction, resulting in an itchy rash. Treatment - Replace any product that touches his skin with a product that is non-toxic, pH balanced and free of irritants.
Allergies (runny nose, itchy / watery eyes, itchy throat, cough) - Something being breathed in was causing his body to react this way in an effort to flush it from the system. Treatment - Identify and replace products that would be breathed in with ones that are non-toxic, pH balanced and free of irritant. Replace your vacuum with one that has a HEPA filtration system. Vacuum mattresses, furniture and window coverings often.
Asthma (a specific type of cough that occurs outdoors with vigorous activity, and indoors during the night, and is often seasonal) - An irritant was being breathed into the lungs, whether indoors or outdoors causing the allergic reaction and resulting in lung constriction and inflammation. Treatment - Identify the trigger and either eliminate it or replace it with an item that is non-toxic, pH balanced and free of irritants.
The common denominator for me was "non-toxic, pH balanced and free of irritants." That got me thinking, maybe my son could be CURED of his allergies, rather than treating them with prescription and OTC allergy drugs if I could just identify them and remove them! I did some research and found that my son was allergic to chemicals in Tide, Johnson & Johnson, Bounce, Cascade, and every single cleaning product, hygiene product and laundry product in my house. Some people are just sensitive to chemicals used to preserve the product's shelf life and symptoms manifest in the form of allergies, eczema and asthma.
I knew what I had to do - convert my home to safer, non-toxic, and pH balanced products. In my research I came across a company, called Melaleuca, that sold almost 400 products in 5 different lines (health, body and beauty, home care, kids, and medicinal) that are all scientifically proven to reduce the symptoms of allergies and bring tremendous allergy relief to hundred of thousands of people across not only the United States, but the world!
After converting my cleaning supplies and laundry to these products, I saw a dramatic improvement. Hadley began sleeping longer stretches at night because his allergies were not keeping him up. I was so impressed that I also switched all of our hygiene products as well and we saw even greater improvements in his allergy symptoms.
I am so excited to report that Hadley is now allergy free, eczema free, and asthma free. He has not had a patch of eczema, an asthma attack, or a battle with allergies in over a year and a half. I was recently able to throw away all those expired prescription and OTC medications with confidence that his battle with allergies, eczema and asthma is over!
