So why would a compound that's used in the manufacture of plastics be in milk or milk-based products? U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorities believe melamine was used to falsely boost the nutrient value of the foods in which it was placed-specifically the protein content. It is surmised that watered-down product was enhanced with melamine so that the product would pass nutrient testing.
Melamine is also the substance that was at the center of the tainted pet food manufactured in China in 2007 from which many cats and dogs became ill or died. That same year, Canadian and U.S. health officials tested fish samples after learning that some farmed fish had been fed with food tainted with melamine.
Think you're safe if you're not a resident of China? Think again. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has implemented a border watch on milk products from China, as well as issued recall warnings for three of the Mr. Brown 3-in-1 instant coffees, a dessert mix called Nissin Cha Cha Dessert that was made with Yili Pure Milk, and White Rabbit brand candy.
The products which are part of this voluntary recall from the manufacturers are:
Instant Coffee 3-in-1 Mandheling Blend Coffee, UPC 4 710085 122523
Instant Coffee 3-in-1 Blue Mountain Blend Coffee, UPC 4 710085 200597
Instant Coffee 3-in-1 Arabica Coffee, UPC 4 710085 122509
These Mr. Brown 3-in-1 coffees are sold in 450 g packages with expiration dates of April 9, 2010 to Sept. 12, 2010, inclusive.
The other product which is part of the voluntary recall is:
Nissin Cha Cha Dessert, made with Yili Pure Milk, UPC 4 897878 550005
The dessert is sold in 440 g packages with all "Best Before" dates.
All flavors of White Rabbit brand candy are part of the recall in Canada.
Canadian residents with questions about recalled products or food safety are urged to call 1-800-442-2342 between 8AM-8PM EST Monday-Friday.
The side effects of ingesting melamine contaminated products can be kidney stones and renal failure in infants.
