Melissa Leo wins the SAG Award for Outstanding Female Actor in a Supporting Role for her performance in "The Fighter." Leo gives a gritty performance as Alice Ward, the mother to boxer Micky Ward.

Active in the business since 1984, the 50-year-old actress hasn't seen this kind of attention since her performance in "Frozen River" where she was nominated for a SAG Award and an Academy Award, among others. However, the nominations and awards for "The Fighter" are even more numerous. This month Leo won a Golden Globe for her performance and she's up for an Oscar. Will she get it? Her chances are excellent.

The SAG Awards celebrates not only the actors, but also the actor's union. During Leo's acceptance speech, where she indicated that she's "better when I have my words written for me," she gave a shout out to the unions. "Unions made this country great because it gives the voice to the working people," said Leo.

Who else was up for the SAG Award for Outstanding Female Actor in a Supporting Role?

Amy Adams in "The Fighter"

Helena Bonham Carter in "The King's Speech"

Mila Kunis in "Black Swan"

Melissa Leo in "The Fighter" (Winner)

Hailee Steinfeld in "True Grit"

As the wife of a Union rep, I thought this article was great!

Good article! Thanks, Jolie, for pointing out the union support aspect! (I'm a member of AFSCME.)

Way to go Melissa. I also appreciated Natalie Portman's remarks. I hope SAG actors will continue to verbally support their union and other AFL-CIO unions. The public sector workers (DPW, paraprofessionals, etc,) and the unions AFSCME, teachers really need some positive shout outs.
