Melissa Joan Rivers was born Melissa Warburg Rosenbergy on January 20, 1968 in Manhattan. She is the only daughter of Joan Rivers and British-born producer Edgar Rosenberg who in 1987, committed suicide. Melissa then took on her mother's stage surname. She is of Russian-Jewish decent on her mother's side and German-Jewish and British on her father's side.

Melissa attended John Thomas Dy School in Bel-Air and then attended The Buckley School located in Shermon Oaks, California. She enrolled in the University of Pennsylvania and is a 1989 graduate.

She married horse breeder John Endicott On December 12, 1999 and they had one child, a son named Edgar Cooper Endicott who was born on December 1, 2000. The couple were divorced on June 19, 2003.

Melissa has had a busy career and appeared in shows including Beverly Hills 90210, Silk Stalkings, The Comeback and The L World. Melissa has worked with her mother and hosted fashion on the red carpet interviews for the E! Cable network. She, along with her mother, left the red carpet pre-show in 2003 to accept a deal with the TV Guide Channel. However, their contract with the TV Guide channel was not renewed once it was expired. Melissa then appeared on the AbC Network reality show I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here! In 2002, where she came in second place.

Both she and her mother played themselves in a television movie called Tears and Laughter: The Joan and Melissa Rivers Story. This show dealt with the suicide of Melissa's father and appeared in 1994.

Melissa is a regular on the Tom Green Live webcast show.

In June of 2008, Melissa was on NBC's show Celebrity Family Feud as the Rivers Family Team. She and her mother were battling against the Ice-T Family Team and went on to face the Raven Symone Family Team. The Rivers won $50,000 for their Guide Dogs for the Blind charity.

Melissa also appeared on the NBC reality television program Celebrity Apprentice but was fired in the April 26, 2009 episode, after which she was reported as storming out of the boardroom.

She is an accomplished equestrienne and competes on the show circuits. She has been said to jump horses over four and a half foot obstacles.

She has raised money for other charities besides the Guide Dogs for the Blind and raised $100,000 for the Make-A-Wish foundation.
