Melissa Rycroft Scores a Perfect 10 on DWTS and with Moms Across America

Once Considered an Underdog, Melissa Rises to the Top of the Pack

Jackie Kass
Come on, Moms. It's time to fess up. We love Melissa Rycroft on Dancing with the Stars. OK, the word is already out. Dancing with the Stars is one of our favorite if somewhat, guilty pastimes, where we actually envision ourselves practicing our hearts out, while the paparazzi asks us to "Look this way" and "What are you wearing?" OK, NOT.

If you are a regular Mom, you probably love Dancing with the Stars for the excitement and escape from the daily reality of homework, endless carpools, SAT's, and perhaps even toilet training and vomit. It's true. Most of our lives are SO much less glamorous, yet we continue to watch and think that maybe next season we too could be one of the competitors.YEAH, RIGHT.

This season is especially exciting because most Moms I talk to are cheering for Melissa Rycroft. Why?We love an underdog! We are truly not envious of this 20-something ex-Dallas Cowboys cheerleader. Oh no. We actually feel sorry for her. Huh? That's right. We feel sorry for this gorgeous brunette with a killer figure because she was publicly humiliated on national TV on the past season of yet another silly reality show, The Bachelor. Her "soul mate" chose her, and then dropped Melissa for his number two choice, Molly Malaney. Get this...Molly actually accepted Jason's proposal, and poor Melissa knew nothing of this dastardly scheme.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I know all of the sordid details of this whole drama, but I am even more surprised to know that Moms across America are not only familiar with this story, but follow DWTS every week only to cheer on Melissa Rycroft.

I started thinking, "Why are Moms so behind Melissa?" Our lives are completely different (you think?), so how can we relate to this way-too-young woman with a body that's just well, way-too-young? It's all too simple. Because we are Moms, we always cheer for the underdog.

Our children have all been underdogs at one time or another. One minute they're one of the most popular kids in school. Uh-oh. Hormones kick in, and then they're considered a geek who is too un-cool for the latest "cool crowd". Give me a break. Raising a child today is like riding the fastest, most unpredictable rollercoaster. One minute you're at the peak, and the next moment you're upside down, suddenly facing the lowest valley. Melissa Rycroft is like the epitome of adolescence.

Our kids face adversity on a daily basis, and we continue to be their number one fan. Just like Melissa faced national and public humiliation, she received an outpouring of public support. Although we may not have a hunky Latin dancing partner, and though our bodies could never bend like a pretzel like hers, as Moms we can relate to Melissa Rycroft. She's been kicked to the curb, and managed to pull her way out of the gutter. This lesson of stamina is what we strive to teach our kids.

For Melissa's effort, gumption and fortitude, Moms across America salute you and we support you (although we may not actually have the time to vote for you!). You make us proud.
