Season 22 of Survivor brought a new twist to the game - Redemption Island. When a person was voted off their tribe they went to Redemption Island where they could have a chance to re-enter the game. When all was said and done, only two players sent to Redemption Island came back into the game, and they were both immediately voted back off. The Redemption Island twist was not welcomed with open arms by Survivor fans, and the initial excitement of seeing two famous players returning in the form of Boston Rob and Russell Hantz soon wore off for viewers.
Episode 1: You're Looking at the New Leader of Your Tribe
Does Everybody Understand?
In the first episode of Survivor: Redemption Island it didn't take the likeable Boston Rob long to create a six person alliance. He has already caught a person that is not in his alliance snooping around searching for a hidden immunity idol. Going into Tribal Council he believes one of the other three players in their tribe have found the idol, so he wants to try something he tried last season '" split the vote. The plan is for the 3 guys to vote for Francesca and the girls vote for Kristina.
Boston Rob clarifies to his alliance, "Does everybody understand this? I got screwed last season because one person didn't understand."
Episode Two: You Won My Vote
Government Jobs Are Stressful
At the confession tree Boston Rob says, "This guy Phillip, FBI, whatever, secret agent, he's a piece of work. He told me that I own his vote for the rest of the time he's here, until he goes to Redemption Island. I don't know if he's delusional. I think he's a good hearted guy, I do, just might not all be there. Let that be a lesson to you '" government jobs are stressful."
Simple as Wiping Your Hiney With Toilet Paper
Ralph tells his story to the viewers about how he found the hidden immunity idol. "I was picking up a few rocks, and I just happened to look in that stump and I said ''ยน..."What's that rock doing in there?' I pulled it back and there laid the idol. I just can't believe I found it that easy. Russell's always saying he's the king of finding idols. He just knows where they at. That was as simple as wiping your hiney with toilet paper." So, Russell, eat your heart out, man.
Episode Three: Keep Hope Alive
You're Not the Boss of Me
The alliance of six on the Zapetera tribe has decided they should split their votes three and three in case Russell does have an Immunity Idol (which is basically worthless unless it is played). Ralph vents, "Russell thinks he runs the show and he don't. He's not my boss and he's not bossing me." Three will vote for Russell while the remaining three will vote for Stephanie who is in an alliance with Russell. Russell, who has been mouthing off that he doesn't need the numbers, realizes that it's going to be a three way tie vote at Tribal with a revote he will be out.
The Best Speech at Zapatera's First Tribal Council
But it's Stephanie that has the best speech of the night when referring to the tribe tactic of throwing a challenge just so they can vote Russell out. "I think the majority of the tribe forget that they are in the game of Survivor. This is Russell! He's played the game. He would be a huge part of moving forward. He's done it - twice! One way or another there's going to be backstabbing made. So if you guys want to become best friends right now, that's fine. But your best friend, to the left of you, to the right of you, is going to turn around and stab you in the back. Having the numbers in a merge is what you need to take over the other tribe. We were two people above them guys, so throwing today's challenge is not strategy, it's plain stupidity."
Finally! Someone that understands the game and is not afraid to say it out loud!
Episode Four: Don't You Work for Me?
Matt's Double Villain Experience
Having been blindsided by his tribe at Tribal Council the villainous Russell Hantz joins Matt on Redemption Island. Matt has an insight about his Survivor experience so far, "Blindsided by Rob; bunking with Russell."
Pink Tighty-Whities
Referring to Phillip's pink tighty-whities Rob observes, "Phillip is a piece of work. I mean who comes on Survivor and wears pink tighty-whities with the stuff just hanging out and just flopping around everywhere. It's not only disturbing, it's actually disgusting."
It Was Not a Lie
After Russell is defeated on Redemption Island, he and Ralph have words. Jeff tries to get some clarity from Ralph asking if what he said about finding the idol early in the game was a lie. Ralph responds, "Could be; could not be." At this point Phillip pipes up (after all, he's been quiet way too long during this encounter), "It was not a lie. I earned my living discerning whether or not someone's telling the truth or not, and you (looking at Ralph) have an idol." Ralph did have an idol.
Just for the Money
Russell drops his buff in the fire and departs the Survivor island. His parting words are, "It's just terrible when you play with people that didn't really come here to play the game. They just came here maybe for fame, or just for the money. This is my last time playing this game." I'm not convinced this is the last time we'll see Russell Hantz on a Survivor island. (When Jeff asks Russell at the Reunion show whether he should throw away his phone number or keep it, Russell responds, "Keep it.")
Episode Five: We Hate Our Tribe
Phillip is Annoying Everyone in his Pink Panties
Lucky Rob gets to be bunk mates with Phillip at his back. Rob immediately asks Phillip, "Do you have your underwear on?"
Let's Keep Phillip
Rob is discussing Phillip's actions with Grant, but has other thoughts at the confession tree. "Tribal Council is always a miserable night all around. On top of it, Phillip is bugging everyone, including myself. He's completely off his rocker walking around in his pink panties. Nobody trusts him. As long as Phillip is aggravating everybody so much, it takes ALL the heat off of me, so in a way, maybe he needs to stay."
Ron and Grant Find a Clue
When Grant rejoins Rob in the woods they read the clue together and then decide to hide the clue by burying it. Boston Rob notes it's a moot point since he already has the immunity idol. Rob says, "When Grant first came up to me I wasn't sure if he saw me in the middle of the woods, so I had to, like, you know, pretend like I was nervous. I mean this is really all for nothing because I already have the immunity idol, you know. But it's fun for me. I have to entertain myself out here somehow. I had to hustle, you know. But you gotta hustle if you want to make a dollar. Everybody knows that."
Episode Six: The Red Headed Stepchild
The Beauty Queens
When Ashley and Natalie refuse to bow under Phillips demands, he barks at them, "You two lay there like beauty queens. This is not a beauty pageant. I am tired of being the redheaded stepchild to you two." Ashley thanks him for the compliment of being a beauty queen and walks away but Phillip continues to follow her, ranting along the way. Ashley vents to the camera, "Phillip is mental, like he literally has a mental -- Somebody needs to diagnose him."
Keeping Harmony
Boston Rob pulls Phillip aside to try to smooth things over and create peaceful harmony in the tribe. At the confession tree, Boston Rob reveals, "Phillip was right. The girls weren't doing anything. The less they do, the happier I am. I don't want them to be working hard and giving us a reason to write your name down to win a million dollars at the end of this thing. I want you to ignore the crap out of everyone as much as possible."
Episode Seven: It Don't Take a Smart One
Sacrifice to the Volcano Gods
Ometepe won the immunity challenge and a helicopter ride to the top of a volcano. Rob never stops playing the game and while the others were gorging themselves Rob found a hidden immunity idol clue, grabbed it and stuck it in his pocket right in front of everyone without anyone noticing. During face time with the camera, Rob tells viewers:
"There's a clue wrapped up like a cookie. But it really doesn't even matter what it says because I already have the idol, so -- .might as well just throw it away." And with that statement, Boston Rob throws the clue into the active volcano as a sacrifice to the volcano gods.
Episode Eight: This Game Respects Big Moves
Matt Returns to the Game
Jeff throws Matt and the others new buffs and makes the announcement everyone was expecting to hear, "We are merged. You are going to merge on a new beach. Here's a map." But Jeff also makes an announcement no one was expecting to hear, "One more thing. Beginning with the next Tribal Council, Redemption Island starts again."
A New Tribal Name
Rob suggests Murlonio, which he says means "from the sea, united." I knew that was a bunch of bull the second it came out of his mouth and Rob confirmed that by revealing at the confession tree, "Murlonio doesn't mean anything. It's just an inside joke between Amber and I. She has a bunch of stuffed animals and Murlonio is like the ring leader."
Episode Nine: The Buddy System
The Magical Feather
A double tribal council sends two players to Redemption Island. Phillip arrives at the immunity challenge wearing a feather in a headband.
Jeff: Phillip, did you have a collision with a hawk?
Phillip: No I didn't have a collision. I had a meditation and through the end of that meditation I asked for a sign and out of thin air appeared this feather.
Jeff: Literally out of thin air?
Phillip: Out of thin air.
A Surprise on Redemption Island
Matt is on Redemption Island (again!) with Mike who was voted off last. But on a surprise twist on double elimination day David joins them. Matt puts his head in his hands and wooingly says, "Whaaat? What's Survivor doing to us?"
Episode Ten: Rice Wars
An alliances food supply is contaminated, leading to an intense Tribal Council.
I Am Crazy
Phillip rants, "Steve feels like he's better than me, you know? And I think it has some slight racial undertones to it. They're the ones who go to the next level to 'You're crazy.' What he said that I said, 'Don't forget that. I am crazy.' "
At Tribal Council Jeff asks who took Phillip's shorts, and Julie immediately raises her hand to confess.
Julie: "I took the shorts! Nobody will ever find them. Dug a hole and they're buried and a rock is on top of them."
Jeff: "If this were therapy, I'd say 'Very good session.' "
Episode Eleven: A Mystery Package
Super Sleuth
When Phillip finds his swim trunks that Julie buried he warns everyone, "Don't mess with the undercover specialist."
Episode Twelve: You Mangled My Nets
A Brilliant Strategy
Phillip knows that he is getting on people's nerves, yet he is not worried about being voted out tonight. He reveals, "Early on in the game, I made myself the villain, so that everyone is my tribe feels their best chance of winning against anybody is me. It's a brilliant strategy."
Episode Thirteen: Too Close For Comfort
Just Crazy
After Phillip goes on another one of his rants with the girls, Rob remarks, "He's crazy. Not the n word crazy, just crazy."
Dirty Work
In making the hard decision to vote out Grant, Rob remarks, "Seems like no matter what the situation on Survivor, I have to do the dirty work, because everybody else is too stupid to do it."
Episode Fourteen: Seems Like a No Brainer
A Souvenir?
Rob is contemplating whether he should use his hidden immunity idol at the last Tribal Council it can be played at. "I can still dictate this vote. I don't even need this idol as long as I have Natalie. I could take it home as a souvenir. What can I say? I like to gamble."
Closing Arguments
When the jury gets their chance to question the final three, Natalie, Rob and Phillip, before casting their votes for the winner David doesn't question anyone, instead he gives closing arguments to the jury in what I consider to be the best speech in Survivor history. "And now for something completely different. I'm not going to ask you guys any questions (referring to the final three). I'm not even going to talk to you; I'm going to talk to them (referring to the jury.) There's only one logical decision here. Well, one person doesn't deserve it (referring to Phillip) so we can cut him off. The other one (referring to Natalie) thanked someone for doing it all. Who'd she thank? The guy sitting in the middle. He did everything. And most importantly, he managed to blindside Matt and in the process of doing that he sent a message to his tribe that if any of you show any signs of not being loyal, you're going to go home. He controlled all of you. He controlled your minds, he controlled what you did, he controlled your thoughts, you all bought it and one by one by one all of you were blindsided. A little ruthless, but really, when we started this game two people came in. One of them claimed to be the best ever to play the game (referring to Russell Hantz). He walked out on day eight. There's a guy sitting over there (referring to Boston Rob) that just played the best strategic game this game has ever seen. And it's pretty damn easy to tell you who deserves to get your vote tonight."
Finally! Someone who understands this is a game in which contestants have to Outwit, Outlast and Outplay their fellow Survivors!!
Getting eight of the nine votes cast Boston Rob Mariano finally reached his goal after numerous tries and is awarded the title of Sole Survivor in season 22 of Survivor: Redemption Island.
Next season Survivor will bring Redemption Island back along with 16 new castaways in the South Pacific. There will also be two returning players joining them who are seeking their own shot at redemption. Look for Survivor: South Pacific in the fall of 2011.
Congratulations Boston Rob!
