Memorial Day 2009: Day of Mixed Emotions

Janice Meyer
A time when we pay homage to our veterans,
in early times, was 'Decoration Day.'
One year became our 'Memorial Day,'
taps of bugle, cadence rumble of drums.

Parades through cities, villages, small towns,
commemorate those fallen in battle,
near graves of loved ones lost, now lay bouquets,
our thoughts, our tears flow free for these renowned.

Recall Flanders Fields, where poppies did blow,
between the crosses, row on row, still stand.
Written by Colonel John McCrae, May 3, 1915,
when he saw a friend die in World War I.

The custom of wearing poppies was born,
now veterans offer them for donation.
Wear them proudly, as many sacrificed
their lives for all in a world then war torn.

Did they die in vain, or know victory?
Have you counted the procession of wars?
Pray for world peace in the name of the Lord,
today, He will listen and hear your plea.
