Memorial Day

Terry Sutton
I heard the coronet play those notes that were so familiar.

I stood silently, and cherished the somber tone.

My heart stiffened as I thought of my great uncle who I never knew.

He did not die in war but proudly he did serve.

I thought back to the pictures of the fallen I had seen on TV and magazines in my youth.

The monuments and graves I visit today of those who fell in the hell of war.

The song reverberated through my conscience with the exhale of every note.

It was one instrument playing to the soul of the nation.

One voice that often represented many.

My eyes welled up as I thought of the sacrifice of them and their families.

The flag folded up.

A symbol we too often neglect.

To the Veteran this Memorial Day

You are not forgotten.
