Labor Day Activities & Celebration Ideas

Labor Day Options

The first Monday of September marks another day off for the working man as the next federal holiday edges closer. Flight operations continue, cops remain on duty and hospitals would be functioning during Labor Day. For the rest of those who receive the pleasure of enjoying their day off this one is for you! What to do?

Taking co-workers (friends) out to dinner topping the night off with a visit to the local pub is a far better set of activities than watching the latest movie flick on the big screen. You could go dutch (pay for your own) or treat everyone. And then there is this little thing called a barbecue.

Hold an outdoor barbecue for your friends and co-workers on their special day off. Have a bucket full of ice for cold drinks and beers. What is a barbecue without some music?

Labor Day music can include "Taking Care of Business" by Bachman Turner Overdrive, "Working Man" by Rush, "Take This Job and Shove It" by Johnny Paycheck, "Working for the Weekend" by Loverboy, or "She's a Hard Working Woman" by Donna Summer. Or do what most Jersey folks do and pop on the Boss (Bruce). It is your day off so top the rock off with variety.

And what holiday would be the same without games? Basketball, softball, volleyball, tennis, and any other outdoor sport with or without co-workers can be a lot of fun! You can also have a set of co-worker against co-worker teams. Other games can include cards, horseshoes, XBox (tournament), and so on.

Labor Day cakes can include jokes about the workplace. It is all in good fun, right? One year a co-worker went as far as creating a cake in the shape of human buttocks. They didn't last too long after that. Keep the Labor Day message clean to some extent. Your job may actually depend upon it. All it takes is one bad move to linger straight into a spiral of other complaints.

A pool party is a traditional Labor Day event as the summer wraps up and school begins. Hold a pool party at a local pool or at your own pool to celebrate Labor Day.

Irony in a bucket when a non-working individual does not know what Labor Day means. But they are human too so learn to override the leach of a difference and share the holiday wealth for once. Life is too short - much like their income. Invite your neighbor.

Holding a picnic for another co-worker is not out of the question. Especially if you have your eye on them. Working next to another truly can be magnetic for single people. Just don't go crazy on the picnic decor and activities planned. Meaning, don't jump the co-worker between a nibble of bread and sip of wine. And the last thing you need to do is upset them since you have to work with them or unexpectedly define Labor Day nine months later.

Go MIA! MIA is not designed for those with families so unpack the car. Missing in action can be extremely refreshing as you disappear off of the face of the earth to explore a peaceful Labor Day. Take a walk along a river with a bag filled with items needed for the nature venture. You can also visit the local lakes, beaches, and parks to enjoy Labor Day as well.

If you are friends with your boss then treat them out to dinner and/or a beer. Friends do that on holidays. Labor Day should not be any different.

2011 Labor Day lands on September 5th. Are you prepared to celebrate your day off? Happy Labor Day!
