Memorial Day Events in Harford County Maryland

During this coming Memorial Day weekend, you will see people celebrating the holiday in a variety of ways. There will be cookouts, parties, ceremonies, fireworks, parades and observances. Perhaps you'll just spend a quiet day at home reflecting or remembering. Whatever the choice, the sentiment is the same. In case you're looking for something to do this holiday, here are a few things you might want to check out in Harford County, Maryland.

If you choose to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for this great country, there will be a ceremony at the Bel Air town hall, located at the corner of Hickory Avenue and Lee Way from 11:00am to 12:30pm. The ceremony will honor the men and women of the military who lost their lives defending our freedom. There will be a color guard and a wreath will be presented by each branch of the armed forces. The event will also include a flyover. The American League holds this event and you can reach them at 410-303-8138.

A fixed tradition in Havre de Grace, an observance at the Angel Hill Cemetery will begin at 9:00am and then proceed to Tydings Park before ending at 2:00pm. The American Legion who you can reach at 410-939-4078 conducts this event.

For something a little different, you could make a reservation for $35 at the Chesapeake Heritage Conservancy in Havre de Grace for a deck side view of Concord Point, Turkey Point and the one hundred fifty-six year old Fishing Battery island lighthouses from the Skipjack Martha Lewis. The goal of the Conservancy is to promote historic Chesapeake Bay watercraft such as the Skipjack, and to educate the public about the Bay's heritage. Times are 11:00am - 2:00pm and a box lunch is included in the fee. For more information and reservations, contact Cindi Beane at 410-939-4078.

For you baseball fans, the Ripken Academy in Aberdeen will be running their Memorial Day Tournament on the 23rd, 24th and 25th. This is a 11, 12 and 13 year old tournament with games beginning around 8:30 in the morning until about 5:00 in the evening, culminating with championship games on Monday. Run by hall of fame shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. and his brother Bill, the Ripken Academy boasts 5 signature baseball fields including Cal Sr's Yard, which is a replica of Oriole Park at Camden Yards. The Academy is located on Long Drive, next to Ripken Stadium, home of the Aberdeen Ironbirds. Admission is free and you can find more information at http://ripkentournaments.com/.

Whichever way you choose to celebrate, have a happy and safe holiday and I hope this helps you plan for your long weekend.
