Memorial Day is set aside to honor the men and women who have served their country. While time should be set aside for a solemn moment to recognize their brave service, afterward many Houston, Texas families choose to celebrate this special day with family cookouts and backyard picnics. If you are looking for some fun things to do this Memorial Day in Houston, Texas outside of your own backyard, try out some of the events below.

The Woodlands. Celebrate "Memorial Day in The Woodlands" on Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29, from 6 to 9 p.m. Join them for fireworks, live music, face painting and more. Hosted by the Woodlands Convention and Visitors Bureau, these Houston, Texas Memorial Day events will take place at Waterway Square. The fireworks will be held on both nights at approximately 9 p.m.

Brazos Bend State Park. If camping seems like the ideal way for your family to spend Memorial Day Weekend, Brazos Bend State Park offers hundreds of camp sites to enjoy. Choose to spend the weekend in one of their screened enclosures, or bring your own tent or RV. Spend Memorial Day weekend fishing, hiking, bird watching and just exploring nature on this nearly 5,000 acre Texas state park. You can also picnic alongside the river, or try night fishing off the pier. You may spot alligators, white-tailed deer, and even a bobcat or two while camping, and over 270 species of birds have been spotted here as well.

Ray's Franks. If you are looking for a fun family restaurant for celebrating Memorial Day weekend, Ray's Franks is just the spot for you. Located on Nance Street in Houston, Texas, you can enjoy eating outside if the weather is fine or move indoors if it's not. Enjoy classic Memorial Day fare such as hotdogs and hamburgers, or choose from chicken burgers, veggie burgers, and much, much more. This is a terrific spot for you and your family to enjoy Memorial Day in Houston, Texas, with each item on the menu costing less than $10.

Veteran's Memorial Cemetery. Houston's Veteran's Memorial Cemetery is open from 8 a.m. to sunset every day. It is closed on federal holidays except for Memorial Day and Veterans Day - and what finer way to celebrate our veterans' sacrifice then by paying a visit to this memorial cemetery. It is located on Veterans Memorial Drive in Houston, Texas. Bring along some flowers to honor the fallen who died for our nation.
