United States of America
Several cities claim to be the original place of Memorial Day. It's not important who the first was. It's only important that we care about those who have died in their service. This recognition doesn't need to be confined to one day or one weekend, but this is the day people come together to honor the service members that have perished.
In Shawano, Wisconsin, on May 26 and 27, a massive flea market will be held from 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. This open market is held at the Shawano County Fairgrounds. You can find most anything at the flea market. It's well-known for the wide variety of collectibles and antiques. People have oodles and oodles of things to sell. Here you can find home-made soy candles and soaps, cooking spices, folk and other art, and home decor. Collectibles of many kinds can be found such as lunch tins, old-fashioned cooking utensils, tools, fishing lures, and model cars. There are hats, clothing, boots, and jewelry for sale. There is too much to mention! You have to see it for yourself. This is a nice place to find something unique.
Memorial Day Sidewalk Sales will take place from May 26-28. During this time, the downtown area is the hub of activity. Merchants place goods from within their stores outside onto the sidewalks for people to browse in the open air. This is a social event of sorts as people who have been cooped up all winter emerge to socialize with the other towns people. There are some fantastic shops in downtown Shawano.
On May 28, the Shawano Allied Veterans Memorial Day Parade and Service will take place. The parade will begin at 9:20 a.m. and start at Huckleberry Harbor, just off of north Main St. The procession ends at the Woodlawn Cemetery and here, there is a program to follow at 10:00 a.m. This is a solemn and patriotic event.
After shopping til you drop at the flea market and downtown sidewalk sales and having your fill of tasty food and treats, be sure to remember those that can't walk about freely like you and I. There are many who have died in the name of this country. There are many veterans who are disabled and need our encouragement and kind words. They all thought they were fighting a good fight, and whether or not we agree with war, it seems it will remain an actuality.
If you take part in the Memorial Day events in Shawano, Wisconsin on May 26-28, you might meet an interesting veteran who has a riveting story to share. You may learn from someone who lost a loved one that to have respect, affection, and pride for the dead can be very empty because anyway you look at it, they are simply gone. However, it's important to honor our lost countrymen.
