Memorial Day Weekend is traditionally the unofficial opening of summer, a time for barbecues and picnics, fireworks and festivals, and all of the other great things associated with the warm weather months. A great number of outdoor events, fairs, carnivals, concerts and more are being held throughout Long Island to commemorate the beginning of summer 2011. Take a look at some of the great events in store:

Brookhaven Fair at Bald Hill, Farmingville

The 10th Annual Brookhaven Fair opens for three weekends of family fun for everyone this Memorial Day Weekend. This is one of Long Island's biggest fairs with carnival rides, booths foods, games and more, and it is also a place to go for some very unique shows and attractions. The Great American Frontier Show features amazing stunts by some very talented horses (and horsemen!), as well as other fascinating feats by other frontier animals. The Vaudeville Dog and Pony Show will entertain the masses with great fun and Wolves of the World is an educational and entertaining experience like no other.

The fair runs for four days Memorial Day Weekend beginning at 5p.m. Friday and noon Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Admission to the fair is $8 per person. Check out the fair's website here for more information, directions, and discounted coupons to this fun event.

Cosmo Joe's Festival, Fair and Auction, Elks Lodge Fairgrounds, Highway 39, Southampton

The Elk Lodge's fairgrounds on Montauk Highway (Rte. 39) in Southampton is known as a place for fun outdoor events and this Memorial Day Weekend it hosts Cosmo Joe's Festival, featuring vendors selling their wares of furniture, antiques and collectibles, clothing, jewelry, and much, much more. Call 631-729-3590 for more information.

Bethpage Federal Credit Union New York Air Show at Jones Beach, Wantagh

Jones Beach State Park in Wantagh is home to this fascinating annual event that features US Air Force and other military airplanes performing some of the most death-defying and acrobatic feats around. The air show runs Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day Weekend, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. For more information, check out the show's website here.

Fireworks Display, North Hempstead Beach Park, North Hempstead

The town of North Hempstead commemorates the opening of Memorial Day Weekend on Saturday evening with a spectacular fireworks display honoring those who've fought and died serving this country. The show features live performances by Glass Houses, a Billy Joel tribute band and Early Elton, performing the music of Elton John. The ceremony kicks off at 6 p.m. and the fireworks display begins at dusk.

Weekend Festival, Bellmore Railroad Station, Bellmore

This annual Memorial Day Weekend fest has everything you might find in a fun, family event, and runs Friday through Monday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Memorial Day Parade, Holbrook

This annual event brings many spectators to the geographical center of Long Island. The parade will take place on Monday, May 30th, with the time yet to be determined. To keep up to date with this event, check out the Holbrook Chamber of Commerce website here or call 631-471-2725.
