To Some Person Part 2:
Try to turn your anger into a direction that will make a difference. Work with the truly illiterate masses in this country. You need compassion to do so but without volunteers this problem will only get worse. You will never be able to take away internet access, but you may be able to make a small difference. Or you can complain and be part of the problem instead.
To the last person. You are right. This is what happens when I write news especially. I know the difference. However, like with most people, my editing skills are ignored under pressure. Sometimes I am lazy. I know the difference, however, the way that I process language is largely auditory. Thus I need to remember how important it is to double check myself. Trust me, a lot more time goes in to double checking lesson plans and time with children. I am aware of the significance of what you are saying, however you need to realize that there is a lot more at stake and involved in the problem with American literacy both on and off the computer. If you take away my access to the internet for an editing issue then you will have to take away the internet access of almost every person in America. If my article causes this level of animosity, I pity you. You spend a lot of time angry and cannot move past it, or turn your anger into a productive work.

And you want to be an elementary school teacher? No wonder American kids are amongst the worst on the internet when it comes to writing coherently. With teachers like you who don't know the difference between the words sight and site (and cite, as well, I'm betting) what chance do they have? You probably don't know the difference between there, their and they're either, do you. Or advice and advise. People like you who mangle the English language should not be allowed internet access.

:-{... with law enforcement in my family, I find these stories especially personal and frightening... and, of course, sad.
