Memories of 1950's Television ~ "Sea Hunt" ~ Starring Lloyd Bridges

Black and White Television was All We Had Back Then

I know that my age is showing when I do these articles, but I grew up with television. We were both toddlers and grew into our teens together. When I was little we had fun and carefree programs about the difficult situations we could all get into and the consequences. None of these were critical, but the innocence of youth is something that today's television has taken away. Hope I can bring you back to the good old days.

Sea Hunt was an action adventure series about a scuba diver who got into different adventures each week. Lloyd Bridges was the star of this show and he voiced over the underwater scenes so that it felt like the audience was a true part of the adventure. He played Mike Nelson, an ex-Navy frogman who was a freelance diver helping law enforcement by performing rescues of children trapped in underwater caves, fought bad guys and retrieved evidence from deep below the sea. At the end of each episode he reminded us to be kind to the ocean.

The series ran from 1958 to 1961 and was a career launch for several actors like; Leonard Nimoy, Robert Conrad, Larry Hagman, Jack Nicholson and Lloyd's two sons Beau and Jeff. Lloyd Bridges died in 1998 at 85 years of age and left behind his wife of sixty years, Dorothy and his two sons and a daughter Lucinda. Another son Garrett died of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome in 1948.

Bridges also appeared in numerous movies and television series and his comedic talents got him parts in such movies as Airplane! and Airplane II: The Sequel and this talent also allowed him to play the recurring part of Izzy Mandelbaum on Seinfeld in the 1997 season.

I LOVED Seahunt. I considered it the precursor to "Flipper."

I don't think I ever saw an epsiode of "Sea Hunt", but I'd like to! Like you, I find great comfort and memories of childhood in watching reruns of the television shows I grew up with!
