Memories

A Poem

Etienne J. Sarfelli
I probably thought of something brilliant to say and then refrained
I probably recorded something powerful and then erased it
I probably wrote down some sweet nothing
or some words of a profound nature and then lost the notebook.
Words and emotions and thoughts and images
that I know came to mind or flew onto the page or were uttered
Things I know I said but cannot duplicate exactly
Things I wanted to remember for their sentimental value
or the sweetness or just because that is how I am:
The type of person who cares about everything and
thinks that every moment in life is profound and worthy of remembrance.
I wanted to remember and capture every moment, word, thought, and event
that passed between us;
every smile and every emotion that you and I shared deserved a place in history,
but the storage only holds so much
and I know that some words no matter how brilliant will be forgotten,
and some images will lose their vividness,
and some utterances will not be heard with the meaning in tact.
The thoughts in my head no matter how important may not be spoken,
and the words on the paper may fade with time
or the paper may even be thrown away
every moment in time will still be profound to me somehow,
and any word, thought or spoken, will always be valued in my heart
But I will always wish that I could repeat them again and again so that you would know them too.
