Memories Brought Back

Roni ODonnell
It's funny how certain things remind you of someone from your past. I am sure we all have those little memories.

My mother used to love Christmas so much. She'd have four or five trees up and lights all throughout the house. This was for the grandchildren and guess who she roped into doing a lot of the work. I miss it though and after her death in 1984 my first couple of Christmas seasons were rough. Now I have learned to enjoy Christmas and feel my mother with me then.

My late husband and I always hunted among other sports activities. Now every hunting season I think of him a lot. Especially when I take a deer. I always remember when I shot my first buck and how excited he was. I believe he was happier for me than he was for himself when I would shoot my deer or turkey.

This story is about Pam, a friend I have recently lost to cancer. I had also written a story about her but this one is about a dime.

Working in our little group at the photo lab we always shared happy and sad stories. As I said before we are our own little family there. Always there for each other no matter what.

Pam, who had lost her mother and about a year and a half before she died shared a story with us. She told us how her mother said she found dimes all the time. Every now and then she'd be working with the laundry or cleaning the floor. There would be a dime.

I know, that's an odd story but it is now there in my mind.

Pam died about three weeks ago and once in awhile I think of her. One morning heading into work I was missing her and thinking about the thirteen year old son she had left behind. She had worried about that and so did our photo lab family.

At work I punched in, went to my locker and looked down. There was a dime laying in the corner. I swear every time I think of Pam I find a dime in the oddest places. I've found them outside and throughout the store.
She is always with me.

I realize that's an odd story but isn't it odd how memories of loved ones can come back to you over the simplest of things? Isn't is great?

Sorry about the loss of your friend. Isn't it funny how fond memories come flodding back to you when something out of the ordinary happens. It's lovely of you to write about this, I think most of us can identify with your story.
