Memories of Cinco De Mayo, May 5th Poem

Sheri Fresonke Harper
We all share these memory neighbors,
in the land of the free, or freer,
that once spoke up against tyranny,
said we don't really want to eat cake.

We want to speak our mind,
without threat of jail,
want to put up our feet
without worry of the walls in flames.

We want a vote, a say against slavery
we want a voice who speaks for the we
that is me, and every one of our neighbors
while we sip margaritas.

But just a lick of salt, just a silenced protest,
warm in belly, tequila aflame in brain
is not enough for revolution,
not enough to turn back invasion.

It is the word on the street,
the game plan of social media,
that we all speak out if allowed,
and let it go viral because it promised truth.

The truth of who we are, who we've been,
the Aztec calendar, the golden mask,
the Dia del la Morte, the siesta after noon,
these we bring with us, when we stand up
for the toast, the honor, the memory,
the forgotten past where we began.
