Memories of Martin Luther King, Jr

A Few Recollections Regarding Martin Luther King, Jr

Albert Chang
Martin Luther King, Jr.'s work has influenced my life in many ways. His speeches, public acts, and ideology regarding civil acts has led me in terms of dealing with other ethnicities and authority figures. He taught me that a million people could be gathered together peaceably and voluntarily. These people could march down a street and do the same things that parades do. His Letter from Birmingham Jail was a very inspiring piece that led me to believe that although he was imprisoned, it enabled a group of people's ideas and aspirations regarding civil rights to be realized in one of the quickest ways possible. This method may have spurred educated people to look through societies' spaces to salvage resources and continue to disseminate the idea of furthering civil rights.

As the youngest Nobel Peace Prize laureate upon accepting the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964, what Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke about was that civil disobedience was a viable means to ending racial segregation and discrimination. To be aware of the weaknesses inherit in a group that rely upon passivity and submission to sustain themselves is to be aware that a non-violent means to the end is a way of empowering the civilian class of the United States of America. With his influence, the civilian class could begin to sustain itself without constant sacrifice from other classes influential in the United States of America. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s ability to pass on what he learned from Mahatma Ghandi proved that a large number of people could end several of societies' woes with social methods that include statements and peaceful assembly.

Martin Luther King, Jr. taught me that with enough enthusiasm, fiber, and remonstrations, many things can happen that change the face of a country, without scarring it horribly. His movements were able to change the ideologies of a nation's body of citizens, without unnecessary bloodshed and further remonstration resulting in detainment. If there has been any record in the annals of time regarding the underlying habits of people, obviously Martin Luther King, Jr.'s people have had a steady record of peaceful resolution and hospitable negotiation. The fact that Martin Luther King, Jr. was able to lead The Montgomery Bus Boycott was amazing considering that the boycott lasted so long (a little over a year) and his house was bombed. To stand up for a little girl and a woman who had both faced injustice in light of their seats being taken away from them is a very just thing to do.

It is very nice to have won over 50 honorary degrees. It is also very nice to have been awarded posthumously. I really think that to be honored with a national holiday takes a tremendous amount of validation. To be able to have a day of your own where everyone is allowed to rest is quite blissful. To raise public consciousness is an ability that benefits everyone. To do all that before being attacked in a Harlem department store is a sign that the beginning moves for a national civil rights moment were soon to follow.
