Long years ago
She gazed at her reflection:
Pretty enough, with
Dark eyes and soft auburn hair.
She gazed at her reflection:
Pretty enough, with
Dark eyes and soft auburn hair.
A timid smile
From one too often rebuked.
Too often falling short
Of an unattainable standard.
Unaccomplished, unfulfilled
She wonders why
When harmony is all around her
It is never within her.
She wonders why
She wakes alone.

Commendable.
Love love LOVE this!
What a great job, excellent!!!!!!!!!!
Well, actually, Smorg, I was referring to standards set for her by others -- parents, teachers, siblings, friends, lovers -- but yes, herself too, and probably all unrealistic. But it happens -- hence the increasing numbers of depressed children, I think.
Oy! I suspect there are too many who identify too much with the lady of the poem, Laurel! Having a high standard can be such a burden, ay? (and perhaps not necessarily?) :o)
You are very gifted my friend. I think that the reason she is alone is because some guys can be asses.
Excellent.
Another great poem. Go Laurel, you're on a roll.
Very evocative and layered, hooked me immediately!
