Memory Capsule

A Facebook group is taking submissions until March 25 for a time capsule not to be opened for 100 years, packed full of memories of loved ones that have passed away from cancer. (Source: Alex Lance Jones).

"I've Lost Someone Special to Cancer" will also include videos, pictures, and music on CDs on the list of items within the memory capsule and as of mid-February there were less than 400 spaces left. Those interested are instructed to send ten to 15 photos and tell the music which reminds you of your loved one. A CD will be created to be placed within the capsule and a fee is charged which goes toward the stone and plaque.

The group also has t-shirts coming in during the month of April and on the site is a memory wall where participants can write the name of their loved one, detail mementos about them, and add pictures and videos.

In unrelated health news, Downwinders at Risk stated that people are really needed to speak between 5 and 7 p.m. at DFW's only public hearing being held March 16 regarding the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)'s new ozone standard.

"Officials are about to start writing new clean air plans for DFW and they need to see that there's a constituency for cleaner air," stated an email from Downwinders March 15. "We need to make sure EPA understands that TCEQ and Governor (Rick) Perry don't speak for all Texans when they oppose the EPA's new ozone standard."

The group says the lower standard the EPA is proposing means it's more likely that the Midlothian cement plants will finally be required to install modern air pollution control equipment and that industry is mounting a huge campaign against the EPA's new ozone standard and the EPA needs to be able to point to strong public support when they get sued by polluters.

"If people don't show up, every opponent of clean air will let out a big sigh of relief," the email stated.

Downwinders is an environmental activist group based in Dallas, TX and their website is downwindersatrisk.org. The organization's aim is to reduce toxic air pollution in north Texas.

For more information, call 972-230-3185.

The hearing March 16 takes place from 3-7 p.m. at Arlington City Council Chambers, 101 W. Abram in Arlington.

To reserve a time to speak at the event, email dfwozonehearing@gmail.com and request a slot which are up to five minutes long. You can also just show up and wait for an open speaker slot or if you're shy, submit a videotape of verbal comments.
