Memory. This classic consists of double sets of cards laid face down. You get to turn over two at a time and if they match, you keep the cards and get another turn. This game can be adapted for younger kids by taking out some of the pairs so you are playing with just half the set. You can also print off your own memory cards using familiar faces and photos of toys and household objects.
Remember the Color. You will need some colored blocks or beads and a big, hardcover book for this game. Legos work well as the blocks. Hold the book between you and your child, blocking his view of your side. Place several blocks along the edge of the book and then lift it for 30 seconds. Hide the blocks again and have him try to recreate the exact same color pattern. For example, if you put down red, blue, green, he should do the same. Take turns.
Object Tray. This is good for kids who can already write. Put about 20 items on a cookie tray and cover it with a tea towel. Put it in front of your kids and uncover it for one minute. Then cover it up again and have them write down as many objects as they can remember. This is perfect for a competition, the kid who has the most correct is the winner.
Hide the Toy. For very small children, this game tests their ability to remember where things are hidden. Take a small toy and three plastic cups. Hide the toy under one of the cups and move them around before letting your little one lift the cup where he thinks the toy is hidden. For babies, you can do this with colored cups, but as your child gets older, you'll need ones that are the same color.
Playing memory games with your children is a great way to prepare them for school and learning. The best part? Your kids will be so thrilled to play with you, they won't even realize that they are learning!
