Retaining information can be achieved readily. You will have no doubt heard the term "photographic memory". This is gained by comprehending and retaining information in large chunks, and having the ability to visualize the material when needed. Quite an astounding feat to possess, but entirely achievable with the correct therapeutic process.
A critical component is to relax. This cannot be emphasized enough. If you do not relax, you frustration will only be compounded and you will not be able to access the information you need. Looking at an example; a word you learned to spell in the 5th grade, but is rarely used in conversation. Try to spell it. Chances are that you will not be able to because although you learned the word, there were many more important issues as a 10 year old and relaxation was apparently not one of them.
Having the 'desire' to remember things is vital. The human mind is certainly capable of recalling almost everything we have ever learned if the desire to do so is present. The brain is a vast and complex organ not yet fully understood, but by incorporating beneficial suggestions for the desire to remember, is it possible to recall even the most cryptic images and information from the dark depths of your past.
You brain is like a muscle in that if it is not exercised enough, it will not function to it's best ability. If you were unfortunate to be in hospital for several weeks or months, you will no doubt understand the concept of muscular wasting. For this to be corrected, countless hours of physical therapy is necessary. Your brain is the same, if it is not continually stimulated it cannot be expected to function in the manner it should.
Another factor is self confidence, Worrying about your upcoming exam and whether you really have the ability to pass will only have you second guessing yourself. If this occurs, most of everything you read from that point on will only be recalled with some heavy prompting which you will certainly not have on the day. This fear of failure can be overcome via Hypnosis, and memory improvement therapy is a common request of many Hypnotherapists.
