Memphis Movie Events for November 11, 2011

John Barnett

It's always sad to see Halloween go by. The season of scary movies and candy has passed. November and December are decidedly family-oriented in terms of movie releases and theme. There never seems to be enough time during October to see all the monster movies and horror flicks you wanted. No matter how late you stay up or how long your marathon lasts, you always end up wishing you'd seen some more. Put away those Halloween movies and get ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas, Memphians.

Friday, November 11

Memphis moviegoers will be faced with two decidedly different experiences for new releases. It all comes down to whether you like goofy comedies or high-octane action. For those who like seeing someone kicked into a pit or gutted every two minutes, "Immortals" will likely be your preferred candidate. The fate of the world is on the shoulders of one human by the name of Theseus. Can he defeat the evil King Hyperion and stop him from attaining Greece's most powerful weapon?

Memphians who enjoyed the earlier "300" will likely love this one. In honor of "Immortals," Memphis's movie and entertainment club, Midnight Run, will be holding an HD showing of "300" to its members and invited guests. The "300" showing will follow the viewing of "Immortals" at the Paradiso.

Prefer comedy? Perhaps you'd enjoy "Jack and Jill." The titular twins are both played by Adam Sandler in this goofball comedy. Jack is a successful, mild-mannered businessman with a picture-perfect family. Jill is abrasive, crude, and obnoxious, as well as the bane of her brother's existence. Her visit during Thanksgiving is heavily dreaded every year -- and this time it seems she has no intention of leaving. Memphians who enjoy gender-bending comedies will likely love this one; one such excited resident had this to say.

"I guess Adam Sandler caught the Tyler Perry bug, huh? I'm looking forward to seeing how he treats the role. Not because I've always wanted to see Sandler in drag, but because it takes a strong male presence to make cross-dressing comedy funny instead of awkward." -- Ramona Galleon, 32, Memphis
