Men and Cars: What Truly Happens at the Car-yard

Men are absolutely fascinated by cars. I have seen them getting a strange gleam in their eyes, when they get a car-dealership in sight. The pull is great, irresistible. Hypnotized they cross the road, pulled by this unseen aura the neon-light projects. A big smile appears. Dreamily they approach the car-yard.

The car-dealer , however is not a dreamer. He got out of his fugue-state long ago. He is into making the money, not spending it.
Car-dealers are basically somewhat under-paid psychologists. They recognize all these symptoms from a mile away. Unfortunately they are not psychic and so the first question they ask themselves, when they see a customer wondering around in their yard, touching all the brand-new (or pre-loved) shining cars is:"Can he afford it"?

The second possible obstacle for the car-dealer is: "How do I either get rid of the wife, who no doubt has the money, or how do I get into her good books'?
The first option proves to be impossible. She clings to hubby as if there's no tomorrow. The second option is much more obtainable.
The cheap after shave precedes him by miles, she can detect him from far away, as a matter of fact she could smell him from across the road.
But the car-dealer is by no means a shy, introvert kind of man, he is positively bursting with confidence. He has dealt with this before.

So he tries on the charm. What middle-aged woman wouldn't be impressed by a bit of charm? Actually, to his way of thinking, she should be glad he is giving her attention at all. But it is necessary; if she says "we must go," they will.
So he comments on the weather first. That will break the ice a bit. After the weather comes the subtle bit: how lovely she looks, surely she is young enough for a sports car? Ah, no the car is not for her, it is for him. So that is established then. And what is the car going to be used for? For work, what kind of work does he do? This is interesting and two answers for the price of one.

He doesn't want to sell a cheap car to someone who is a professional, here is money to be made, and after all, that's why he is here.
The man, who is trying to get away from his wife because by now he realizes she is going to object to no matter how wonderful the car is going to be, is trying to become firm friends with the car-dealer. The car-dealer, he with great psychological insight, knows this too.

And so, the conversation drifts to subjects wives don't know anything about: sports. This conversation usually doesn't take long, it is only meant to get some male-bonding. After that, the car-dealer craftily brings the conversation back to the cars.

The wife, by that time, is tired, wants a coffee. She is not that interested in either cars or sports. She also feels a bit left out and is just standing there.
She also has the Gold-card in her purse.
So, what happens next?

She breaks in the conversation, tells hubby she wants a coffee and she wants to "talk it over"
They leave without buying a car this time.
The dreamy look on his face disappears. The spell is broken.
