Men and Violence

Chad R. Herman
It's been proven time and time again that men are violent. You can look at the gang member population, the military population, and even the amount of men in jail. The gangs of today are the evolution of the old mafia street groups that evolved into the mafia, which were and always have been men. The military has been dominated by males for centuries. There are now a number of females that are in the military, but they are a minor population considering the large men population. In both of these positions and populations, women were seen as arm candy, or some sort of decoration that was nice to look at and pleased the men's sexual wants. But does it have to be this way? The simple answer is NO.

According to extensive research done by the CDC 90 percent of all violent crimes are committed by men. Ten percent are committed by females. However, 7% of the violent crimes committed by women were committed towards men or in retaliation to the violence they have experienced by the hands of men. So there is some truth to the stereotype that women are less violent , the statistics themselves prove this. Incidentally, the CDC has continued these statistics through the years, and this number has not fluctuated for 5 years. It's pretty daunting to think that there would be a 3% crime rate Nation Wide; or to put it another way, Society would have a 93% decrease of violent crimes by getting rid of men.

To put this in another context: If there was a insect that was harming a special and expensive crop, the first thing farmers would do is to try to identify the pesticide. Depending on the farm and the farmer, the second thing would be to find the natural killer of the insect, and introduce that into the crops or spray and insecticide to kill the insect. If the insect was hurting 93% of the entire crop, and there was multiple things tried to kill off the pest, the farmer would spray and kill off 10o% of the insects. This is the same scenario we are in, one section of our society is wreaking havoc on the population, the earth, and the air.

Therefore, men have to change. What can men do to change these numbers? To many, this question is as daunting as the statistics that created it. Too many, this task seems impossible. The reality, however, it is very simple to change these stats. All men have to do is stop being violent. The solution is as simple as that. Because we are higher life forms, we don't need to kill or eradicate the whole species. We merely need to educate the boys and men in our society to treat women correctly. To get rid of the ideas and roles that society has portrayed and told boys and men to play, we need to show the boys and men that there is a different way. That conflicts do not need to be solved by violence, but by a simple chat. Whose responsibility is it to educate these boys and men? Everyone is responsible. The parents, the teachers, the people on the street, the women of the world, and especially other men. We as a society need to show these boys what "real men" act like, not these hyperrealist based media that skews and depicts men as war and violence mongers. That depict men as the only controllers of the world rather than a shared partnership with women and all other things in our society.
