Mennen Skin Bracer - Bring Back the Era of the Man

Dad Really Did Know a Thing or Two

Banner Kidd
It's really interesting how one changes over time. Back in the 70's I was a young man with long hair, with a bass guitar strapped on, wearing patchouli oil and thinking I was cutting edge, man! I thought my old man was square and didn't get it. He always wanted me to "have a man's haircut," and be more like a man. The scariest change in my life is coming to the realization that, in most cases, he was right!

My hair, that used to be half way down my back in 1975 is now cut by my daughter with electric clippers and I have to wear a hat to keep my head warm. Patchouli oil is no longer my scent of choice. The trip from Patchouli oil to my Mennen Skin Bracer had a few stops along the way.

I used Avon's Wild Country, for awhile. I used Brut. That stuff stinks. I tried English Leather, Stetson, Black Suede, Musk, and others. But I have finally settled on what my old man used - Mennen Skin Bracer.

That bottle of green liquid that feels cool and stingy when you put it on really makes me feel fresh and clean. I really helps my skin and is far more than a scent. This aftershave, after-shower is great on the face. And, guess what, I like the scent.

Now, it does remind me of my dad. But so does cigarette smoke and I don't want to smoke, believe me! This does more than remind me of Dad. It really works. But reminding me of Dad is not a bad thing, you know.

Being a man, according to Dad's standards, is not a bad thing. Honor, integrity, honesty, and hard work are things that should never become outdated. And, I believe, there is something to be said about short hair instead of hair that looks like a woman. There's a reason that women have long, beautiful, flowing hair. It attracts men with short hair. The differences between men and women are not so obvious anymore.

Nowadays we have scents that are for both men and women. Men don't go to a barber anymore, they go to the same beauty shop that women go to. Gone are the days when I would go to the barber shop with Dad. I remember all the stories by the men who were getting their hair cut and shooting the breeze. A TV usually had the ballgame on and there were stacks of magazines, and comic books. I remember reading comic books and watching the Cincinnati Reds on TV, while awaiting my turn in the chair. Red, the barber in downtown Kendallville, was my favorite. His shop was down below street level, in the basement below Kirkwood's Men's Clothing Store. I loved the smell of witch hazel and the whole atmosphere. It was a place for men. But, sadly, most young men today know nothing of this.

Men have become soft and feminine. They smell like women and look like women. Those who don't are obsessed with looking like some monstrosity of hulking muscle, yet still maintaining some weird feminine qualities. Whatever happened to swapping out the engine in your garage and wiring your own home and all the things that men used to do? Whatever happened to hunting and bowling, and hanging out on the front porch with the guys and teaching your son what it means to be a man? That seemed to go out the window along with the popularity of Mennen Skin Bracer. It's time to bring Skin Bracer back!

You can still buy it in the stores, guys. Let's start a devolution back to the days when men were really men. Grab yourself a bottle and begin using it today. You'll get in touch with the dormant man inside you, and, who knows, maybe one of you will be responsible for raising us some barbers to bring that honorable profession back. It can all start with a little splash of Mennen Skin Bracer on your hand, rub them together, and slap it on your face. Get ready for an exhilaration that will leave you looking forward to doing it again the next morning.

I really enjoy reading your articles, Banner. This is inspirational. I need to reminisce about my life and the changes in society......maybe on my blog. I remember barber shops. Now, as you say, men go to Great Clips, etc. with the girls. What a world! Bring back yesteryear. BTW, my husband uses Skin Bracer.
