Men's Guide to Dressing in a Business Professional Setting

It can be difficult for young men to properly dress in a business setting. Today's urban chic hipster even has difficulty dressing for work. Clothing can create a lasting impression on people. Dress is one of the first things that a recruiter will notice. Follow these simple tips before entering a business casual or professional setting.

Wear proper hosiery. White tube socks make me cringe. Wear dress socks with slacks. Color should complement the shirt and tie color. Wear solid color blue or black dress socks for a conservative look. Argyle is a nice addition to the business casual look. Navy blue and gray look fantastic with a pair of khakis.

Sport an interesting tie. Never wear a solid colored tie. Wear a tie with some pizzazz. Avoid outrageous prints and childish designs. Commit to the tie. It should be properly worn. Skinny ties can be worn in casual settings.

Look at what everyone else is wearing. Co- workers and superiors are great references for clothing. A man should dress the way his boss does. This is very important when entering a new profession. Avoid dressing like casual, tenured employees.

Always wear a belt. Skipping this leather accessory is a fashion disaster! An outfit looks incomplete without a belt. Dress shoes and belts should coordinate. In a business professional setting, men should wear cordovan (burgundy) or black leather accessories.

Some colors should never go together. Avoid wearing black with brown or blue. It isn't a good look, regardless of what anybody else has to say. These colors can occasionally be combined but it is easier for most men to avoid the mismatched situation altogether.

Wear dress pants at the waste. Last time I checked, they don't make low rise khakis or dress slacks. Don't try to improvise; wear dress pants at the waist! Pants worn below the waistline just look sloppy. Wear tailored pants in business professional settings.

Be conservative, not uptight. This might sound like an oxymoron but it isn't. Clothing should be professional and appropriate. It should also be comfortable. The man should wear the suit, not the other way around. Dress clothes should not alter or restrict movement.

Use these tips, along with personal judgment when dressing professionally. Young men are often tempted to incorporate their personal styles into their work wardrobe. This ok, when caution is used. Make stylish, neat, clean fashion choices.
