Men's Pregnancy Guide: How to Pick the Right Hospital

Evan Nash
Pregnancy is a thrilling time for every family member involved as it is the first opportunity to see the beginning of a new generation. As this generation starts to file in it is important for the mother and father to know how the day will go when the baby is born and introduced to the world. There are a few things to consider when picking a hospital for labor and delivery, some more obvious than others. Here are a few questions or concerns that you should raise when deciding where to deliver:

1. What is the proximity to your home? Regardless of what you see on television, rarely is the labor and delivery so fast that you almost don't make it to the hospital. Usually the opposite is true when going to the hospital as you wait through a lot of pain for your partner. Even though it is not a rush situation to get to the hospital, the ride home could be a little too bumpy for your partner.

2. What is the hospital's rule in regards to the father's role? Sometimes hospitals make little known rules to get better deals on insurance and the like where they exclude certain people from certain areas. One of these situations happens when the hospital bars men from certain rooms or procedures in the birthing process. Make sure you find out if you can be in the room for a C-Section or all other possible contingencies in delivery so you can be present for the birth moment.

3. Does your insurance cover the hospital and the doctor? You have likely already established with your health insurance company that your doctor is covered by your plan, but what about the hospital. Shockingly, in health insurance today a health insurance company can grant approval to a doctor without approving their hospital. This could mean much higher charges for you during the delivery which will make post-delivery pretty difficult.

Whenever you are visiting a hospital to inquire about delivering your baby there you should ask for any referrals they may have, or possibly even if they have courses where you can learn their approach. Sometimes the enjoyment of the entire process of delivery can be marred by a bad experience with the hospital or an employee of the hospital. Don't let this ruin the situation for you, make sure you research hospitals well before they delivery and you will be much more happy with the results.
