Menstrual Migraines Implode: Ways to Deal with Monthly Migraines

Kathy Foust
Menstrual issues are awful. There's no way around it. Between PMS, the actual period, cramps, migraines, mood changes and all the other lovely menstrual issues that women have to deal with, it's a wonder that we have any sanity left, never mind the fact that our family members actually somehow survive us!

I've learned to deal with my PMS. I've accepted a few things that make it possible for women to survive PMS. I've even developed techniques so that my loved ones are still able to see me in some kind of nice light after a particularly bout of PMS.

I've come up with ways that men can survive PMS. After all, they usually get the brunt of the emotional outbursts that can sometimes come unbidden during PMS. If they're smart, they'll take some of my advice and possibly extend the sane years of their life.

I don't know how to make peri-menopause go straight to the nonexistence of a period and I have yet to figure out why it is that men are so appealing the day before my period and so unappealing the day my period ends.

But, I have figured out that it's best to just embrace the mental illness of PMS and a few little tricks to make the menstrual migraine go away, providing I actually catch it in time. I don't keep midol or other pain killers and menstrual symptom removers around the house. But, I do have one heck of a strong will and it serves me well for this purpose.

For many people, the symptoms of migraines come on long before the migraine itself. The technique I use to get rid of my menstrual migraines is the same one I use to get rid of normal headaches and needs to be done before the menstrual migraine becomes full blown, about the time the warning signs come on. For me, these come in the way of "floaters" (the little lights that you see which aren't really there) and sometimes "tics" (small muscle spasms).

Once I see the warning signs of the menstrual migraine, I seclude myself in a dark room and practice my technique. Sometimes I do this in a hot sage bath to ease the muscle strain and cramps so they don't distract me as I perform my migraine relief technique.

I close my eyes and block everything else from my mind. Then, I visualize a very large orb of light that is filled with small pinpricks of light that resemble static on a television. In my mind, I push down on this orb until it gets smaller and smaller. As it gets smaller, the pinpricks of light get closer together. When it is very small, the lights get so close together that they actually implode and dissipate, as does my migraine. This technique is mind over matter for sure, but it works for me as long as I don't allow myself to get distracted. Now, you might wonder why I can't get rid of my PMS as easily as I can get rid of my menstrual migraines, but PMS is just too big! Instead, I just avoid the world and in this way I can spare myself a meeting with a prosecuting attorney who might actually think women have some semblance of sanity to be responsible for when they have PMS!
