Mind Over Matter in Sports

Some top athletes claim that their job is 20% physical and 80% mental. Often superstar athletes are not the tallest, fastest, or the strongest. However, they have the mental components necessary to beat out the competition. Obviously, the brain controls all of one's future actions. Therefore an athlete should start with the mental conditioning before he ever sets one foot in the gym. Physical training is important but it is secondary in importance.

Being an athlete on a field is in many ways similar to being a business person in an office, or a construction worker working on a project. Each of these people has to respond to events the best possible manner. For the athlete, this may consist of dodging a tackler or shooting the winning shot of the game. To be best prepared to succeed in future actions the athlete must have a success mental road map laid out in his mind. The mental road-map which is the most ingrained in his mind will be the most likely path that his actions will take.

If he is focused on not dropping the ball, he will be more likely to drop the ball. The mind is swayed by negatives and positives. Even though he is focusing on not dropping the ball, the entire thought is negative in nature and thus his future actions are more likely to take a negative path. However, if he is constantly focused on making the shot then he has placed his future actions in positive territory. Subsequently he is more likely to make the winning shot. So, consider whether the balance of your thoughts is negative or positive. These thoughts will greatly determine your outcome.

It is beneficial to think in creative ways in order to obtain higher performance out on the field. For example if you are a wide receiver on a football team imagine that your hands and the ball have velcro attached to them. If you are a basketball player imagine that the hoop is 100 feet wide. If you are a runner imagine that you have bionic legs that can destroy the competition. This type of thinking isn't the only component to athletic success but it is enough to give a dedicated athlete an edge.

Also focus on your main objective because this is what you will push yourself toward. If your objective is to win the national championship focus on that as your top priority. All the component parts of that goal will be also be focused on subconsciously in order to bring the main objective to fruition. Combine all of the mental techniques described in this article and you will find athletic success coming more easily to you.
