"The Mentalist" season finale which airs on Thursday, May 19 could be a game-changer. The "Mentalist" finale will reveal "Red John" to the main character of the show, and fans are probably hoping that it also includes an audience reveal. For those who have stuck with the show through the first three years, the upcoming series of events have been a long time coming.

Entertainment Weekly reported on some items that were teased in the season finale episode promos. EW confirmed what is coming, and that main character Patrick Jane is about to come face-to-face with a serial killer that the CBI has been after for years. That killer ("Red John") murdered Jane's wife and child, and he rededicated his working life to track him down.

Through the three seasons of "The Mentalist," there have been quite a few clues left behind by "Red John," and the investigators on the show have come very close to him several times. In fact, during the season two finale, it appeared that "Red John" actually saved Jane from getting killed by someone else. It seems to have been a way to save Jane for himself (or herself) and draw out the "game" that the two of them are playing.

It's hard to project exactly what CBS was trying to do with the previews for the two hours of "The Mentalist" on May 19. The network acted like it was "Red John" speaking to Jane during that promo, but that clip could have been doctored or it could have been a conversation over the phone. Viewers weren't shown what Jane was looking at, keeping the mystery alive for what might be a really shocking finale.

Simon Baker is the star of the show, in a role that has really made him a Hollywood star. He was in several projects before this one, but this is the show he will probably be known for when he stops acting. He serves as a consultant for the CBI (California Bureau of Investigation) on the show, and helps solve crimes by using his keen powers of deduction. Some around him feel that he is psychic, and he uses that to his advantage in cases.

While there are quite a few interesting supporting characters in "The Mentalist," nearly all of the plotlines work through Jane and his boss Teresa Lisbon (played by Robin Tunney). The pair has an interesting chemistry as they work through cases, and it often seems like they are just a step away from developing a relationship on the show.

The season three finale has been promised to be exciting, and hopefully CBS will fulfill the hopes of many fans.
