Meredith Emerson's Body Found

RK
The nation's worst fears have come true when the body of missing hiker, Meredith Emerson, was found in Dawson County, Georgia on Monday night. No further information has been released at this time.

Meredith Emerson was last seen on New Year's Day hiking in the north Georgia mountains. Several witnesses reported seeing Meredith speaking with a sixty year old man who was later identified as Gary Michael Hilton. Both Meredith and Hilton were walking on a trail while talking. Witnesses reported seeing Meredith and Hilton following their dogs up the trail.

When Meredith did not return home, search teams went out looking for her. Authorities also searched for Hilton who they called a "person of interest" at the time, for questioning.

During the search for Meredith and "person of interest" Hilton, Meredith's water bottle and dog leash were found. A baton was also found. A person who knew Hilton, reported that Hilton always carried a baton when hiking.

Police found Hilton after witnesses reported seeing him. Meredith's dog was also found roaming around a parking lot approximately sixty miles away from where Meredith had last been seen. A microchip verified the identity of Meredith's' dog, Ella.

In a trash dumpster not far away from where Meredith's' dog had been found, police found several shirts that matched the description of Meredith's clothes, covered in human blood. Meredith's wallet was also found in the trash dumpster along with a piece of a car seatbelt that was covered in human blood.

In a search of Hiltons' car, police found that a piece of the seatbelt had been removed. Hilton had attempted to use Meredith's credit card and had reportedly used a payphone close to the vicinity where the items had been found in a dumpster.

Hilton was originally held on an outstanding warrant. Authorities soon charged Hilton for kidnapping with bodily injury. Police felt at that time because of evidence they had obtained, that the chances were small that Meredith was still alive. The search for Meredith continued.

Monday morning, Hilton appeared in front of a judge who denied him bail. Monday night Meredith's body was found.

If Hilton is convicted of kidnapping with bodily injury, he could receive a lifetime sentence. With the recovery of Meredith's body, Hilton may be charged with additional charges.

"Rest in Peace Meredith, your light will be missed by all who knew you." is written on helpfindmeredith.com, a website whose purpose was to help find Meredith. A nation mourns for Meredith and her family.

I am very saddened and angered at this grisly murder. I don't mean to be critical but why on earth would this young woman even talk to that freak. You can look at him and tell he wasn't right. I'm very sorry, so sorry and sickened by this whole thing. My heart goes out to the family and friends. As for her murderer, I feel that he should have been beaten real good by the police, then turn him over to population and let some of those inmates have him for a while. While some heart bleeders say he deserves help and treatment; The best treatment would be a lynch mob! Give me or any real man one hour with him. I'd like to punch his face in.

UPDATE # 4: According to ajc.com, the Florida District Attorney is preparing to press murder charges against Hilton for the murder of Cheryl Hodges Dunlap. Her body was found in the Apalachicola National Forest on December 1, 2007. The Florida District Attorney believes they have enough evidence to prove Hilton guilty of Cheryl's murder. US Forest Rangers and other witnesses saw Hilton in the Appalachicola National Forest in Florida at the time of Cheryl's murder.

This is such a sad situation. I have a teenage daughter and cannot imagine what I would do if anything happened to her. I have talked with her about this and the importance to always be aware of your surroundings and that you need to always be careful and that unfortunately you cannot trust any stranger. It is a shame that this is what this country has come to. It saddens me to think what her family is going through. I can only imagine how devistating this is for them. My heart goes out to them.

My heart goes out to her and her family. It's so horrible that this had to happen, but I am equally happy that they now have the man in custody where he will not be able to hurt anyone else.
