Merging onto the Highway

Does it Have to Be so Hard?

J Gorman
You know when you're on the highway and you see a mess of traffic looming up ahead? In less than one minute's time, you have come to a complete stop, and all you can see for the span of the horizon are red brake lights. You prop your elbow up onto the window and rest your chin on your fist, obviously perturbed.

As you continue through the traffic, the line of cars behind you lengthens, but those in front remain. Until all of a sudden you have begun to move and you gradually reach top speed, ecstatic. In retrospect, you realize that never did you pass any accident or other sign that might create such a traffic jam.

Let me explain to you what happened: A bad driver tried to merge.

It happens multiple times a day, and always creates traffic. Not only on-ramp traffic, but highway traffic as well. To anyone who needs instruction (or has driven with someone who needs instruction), print this out because it will be useful. Not only to you, but also to every other driver in America.

When merging onto the highway, do not stop on the ramp. It is needed in order to pick up your car speed to begin traveling as though you are already on the highway. If you stop, everyone behind you has to stop, and then everyone behind them onto the road from which you all are trying to merge. It gets ugly.

If you are already on the highway, help out your fellow driver. If there is nobody in the left lane blocking your way, get over to allow easy merging. In the event that someone is directly beside you (or too close for movement), alter your speed to allow the mergers to enter the highway either in front of or behind you. That would you would need to either lay off the gas or step on it.

That's the golden key. That's all there is to it. Simple, right? Try it! Believe me, it works wonders. You will be amazed.

Most of all, when driving, brake as little as possibly. We all know when someone in front of us brakes, we are more inclined to do so as well. If everyone brakes in response to your first move, then the entire highway will slow down whilst lighting up the sky with the redness. And we all know how annoyed we get when all we see in front of is are red brake lights.

The gist of it all is to be considerate. Won't you, please?
