Merrily Myopic: Satisfaction Through Simple Living

Meg Bartlett
Being short sighted has its benefits, like focusing on what is closest to you. In times of stress or anxiety our bodies naturally draw us in - it's a survivial instinct - like fight or flight. Simple living also draws you in and focuses your energy on what is closest to you; health and personal happiness bloom. Simple living doesn't resist change and it isn't unsophisticated; it's just another way of adapting.

Begin by filtering out the noise. For example, plan your TV time like you would a meeting or a date and receive what you intend filtering out the other broad-casting someone else wants you to see. Selecting news sources carefully can give you current information important to you. Read the newspaper, in fact, just read period. Very myopic, very short sighted, and yes, very satisfying.

Traveling is an accepted part of contemporary living. Balance this mobility with destination home. Making home a destination gives your family someplace to rely on for safety and shelter, nourishment and encouragement. Think carefully about what your family needs and wants at home and design a unique place that everyone enjoys, most of the time.

Even closer, more myopic, is the dinner table. What we eat and drink becomes part of our muscles, our brains, helps us breath. Select meats and grains, dairy, fruits and veggies carefully to offer your body the best fuel for living. Choosing good food does nt have to be expensive and it doesn't hae to be gourment to be good for you. Basic cooking from whole foods is inexpensive, easy and satisfying. Learn how to cook foods that work for you.

Tame the time consuming errands. Use online services if they save time. Shop locally and evade aggravating crowds. When you spend myopically, you find interesting regional stores (with neighborly folks) for distinctive gifts and common needs. Very simple and very satisfying.

There are risks, of course, in simple living. You may not win the race for technical savvy or swagger down Main Street in cutting edge style. And the other lifestyle, the one with breadth and depth of vision, might not be able to focus near on the satisfied smile you wear as you spend your time living simply. The reality is nobody can be everything to everybody all the time, so get back to basics and simplify.
