Why would Ferndale's Kulick Community Center offer "Messy Mondays" arts and crafts for preschoolers?

"Children love to get messy," reads a promotion.

But should kids be able to get as messy as they please?

Not exactly. But Melody Williams, a Head Start preschool teacher and a college instructor who guides university students who are pursuing teaching careers, explains: "Children learn best through exploration and play '" not only in art, but across the curriculum. The messier children are allowed to be, the more creative they will become."

Children's staffers at the center will make sure the kids' clothes are protected, of course, and all craft materials are non-toxic and washable.

Sessions are the second and fourth Mondays of every month, which means the next opportunity is from 10:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Oct. 11. The center is at 1201 Livernois in Ferndale and there is no charge.
