Metabolic Disorders - Why They Need to Be Corrected

A Good Metabolism is Vital in Ensuring that Your Body Functions Normally

Paul Neidig
Most of the time, our metabolism works perfectly, and we go about out daily lives without ever being conscious of the various metabolic processes going on inside our bodies. However, there may come a time when our metabolism goes awry, and sometimes this involves how our body is absorbing the sugar or converting food into fuel. This condition is termed as a metabolic disorder, which means that the body is experiencing a negative chemical reaction.

If you are ever diagnosed with a metabolic disorder, your doctor will recommend ways to reverse the problem. You may be advised to make changes to your lifestyle or take medications in order to set your metabolism back to normal. For some people with a metabolic disorder, the only way to cure their problem is to increase their metabolism. However, most metabolic disorders can be solved by simply losing all the unnecessary weight. A person's metabolism rate directly affects the amount of weight he or she gains or loses. For many overweight people, the solution to their weight problem is to increase their metabolism.

There is a more serious reason to increase the rate of metabolism and this has something to do with metabolic abnormalities. Such abnormalities in metabolism include irregular hormonal enzyme levels and problems involving hormone and enzyme functions. Metabolic abnormalities render the body unable to perform the various metabolic processes. In this case, toxic compounds would begin accumulating in the body, which can lead to substance deficiency or serious medical conditions.

Depending on the condition, increasing or decreasing the rate of metabolism can treat a metabolic disorder. To illustrate, hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid glands) involves the production of too much thyroxin hormones responsible for increasing the rate of metabolism. Thus, a person who suffers from hyperthyroidism may experience extreme weight loss, high blood pressure and heart rate, swelling or goiter. In this case, the metabolic disorder needs to be slowed down. Hyperthyroidism can be cured with surgery or radiation.

Hypothyroidism (inactive thyroid glands), on the other hand, is another metabolic disorder wherein metabolism needs to be increased or else, the sufferer may end up with a serious thyroid condition, brain disorder and other growth problems. An individual suffering from hypothyroidism may experience severe weight gain, slow heart rate, fatigue and constipation. In this case, the metabolic disorder needs to be hastened.

There are metabolic disorders that are inherited. These are referred to as "inborn errors of metabolism." People with inborn metabolic disorders such as galactosemia and phynylketonuria need to consult their doctor for the proper treatment and medications.

A good metabolism is vital in ensuring that your body functions normally. A metabolic rate that is too fast or too slow is not a good thing. If you should experience any of the symptoms of abnormal metabolism, do not hesitate to talk to your doctor about it so that it can be determined if you need treatment.
