First off the better detector or ( machine ) you buy, the more things it will be able to find and do for you. Now you can spend $100 and well into the thousands of dollars if you want on detectors. I would start some were around $300 to $400 to get in to it with. This way you will have a decent machine to begin with. This price range will give you some good ones to choose from. You can look on the Internet in detector forms and sites that sell them to give you an idea to witch machine you would buy first. The forms will really tell you the best ones and the machines to stay away from. You can go to YouTube on the Internet to to see some video's on metal detecting or coin shooting.
Just think first where you will be using it the most at. Like will you use it at the beech by the ocean, if so get one that salt water will not bother. Or are you going to be using it on dry land. Next will you want to look for coins and jewelry or just old relics. Knowing this will help you decide witch machine will be the best one for you to start out will. Also the better machines will work in both places. If you buy the cheapest one you can find you may never have any luck finding anything good with it. You may get discouraged and never try a better machine then.
Once you get your machine you will want some extras for it too. Head phones are a must if you really want to hear small changes in the tones the machine will make. You will also need some thing to dig with. When digging in lawns you will want to make as little as a hole as possible. I use a cheap heavy kitchen knife for this. I will cut out a plug of grass and use a small garden hand trowel to dig deeper if needed. You will also need some kind of container to put your finds in. A cheep nail pouch use by carpenters work good for this.
Just keep in mind when you do get out and start digging holes that you always file in your hole when done. It is always a good idea to be as neat as you can so not to anger the land owner and not be aloud to go back to a good spot.
Places to search are really every where. First your own yard would be a good spot to start. Any neighbors that will let you search their ground too. The older the home or building is the better chance you will have of finding old coins and jewelry. Old schools and parks are good places to go. Swimming holes along ponds and rivers, and also the ocean. Sand is always easy to dig in.
Last thing to remember is to always have permission to hunt where you go. And offer to share what ever you find with the land owner if they ask. That will keep the hobby of metal detecting good in the eyes of the land owners. Just look at it this way, if they all said no the the hobby would be dead fast.
Have fun and happy metal detecting!
