Many people have made metal detecting a hobby. As far as hobbies go this one is pretty reasonable in price. You'll have a definite price range. You can spend a little or a lot of cash on a metal detector. Try to choose a model that is in the middle price range. You don't need a high-end, top-of-the-line variety but you don't want to buy the cheapest out there either.
The first thing to consider when purchasing a metal detector is the size and weight. If you are planning on partaking in several hours of detecting at one time, then choose a light-weight detector. Make sure the detector has a long enough handle so you don't have to stoop over the unit when the detector is in use. Try to find a unit with an adjustable handle.
Look at the unit to see how deep into the ground the actual device can detect. Higher-end models have a feature to where you can adjust the depth.
Make sure to choose a model that has a significant sound difference when it has detected an item.
Make sure the actual display on the unit is readable.
Check the battery requirements. If you are planning on long excursions you will need to know how long the batteries will last in the unit.
Another good feature to choose is to find a unit that is water-proof. You never know when a sudden rain shower might strike.
Metal detecting as a hobby can be quite relaxing and rewarding. Get your whole family involved. Young children will find this activity fascinating. Not only can you scour your yard, but also beaches and parks. Anyplace that is a public area. If the place is a historical landmark, get permission first. Just know if you find anything really old on historical property you should turn it in. Just as a conscience thing. You never know what you will find.
