Metallica Death Magnetic a Hit in Spite of Controversy

Kirby Warden
After months of some of the most heated discussion and anticipation that any band has ever received, Metallica released their newest album of original material, Death Magnetic, on Sep. 12, 2008. You can view the official announcement of the release of Death Magnetic on their website here. Before the first day of availability was over, Death Magnetic had gone already gone platinum in Europe. More specifically, Blabbermouth.net reports that in Finland, Death Magnetic was already approaching triple platinum status on the first day of release, and you can see the report here.

The release of Death Magnetic was not without some controversy, however, as reports of sub-standard engineering have sparked heated debates across the Metallica website forums. Some fans argue that the "clipping" throughout Metallica's Death Magnetic ruins the long-awaited experience and that a recall and/or a reissue should commence as quickly as possible. Other fans claim that there is absolutely nothing wrong with the sound of Death Magnetic. Whatever the truth may be behind the "clipping" issue, nothing seems to be stopping Metallica's Death Magnetic from flying off the shelves in record numbers all over the world.

While some Metallica fans absolutely loath the new Death Magnetic album simply because it does not sound like Metallica's material from their earlier years, other fans have nothing but praise to offer the new album. Fan highlights include some of the best metal music Metallica has done in recent memory. Fans of Metallica's Death Magnetic have pointed to the return of guitar solos that were notably absent from previous material. Not only have guitar solos returned, but Metallica has included an instrumental on Death Magnetic that fans love.

There appears to be no over-all theme or plan to the new album accept to showcase the best and heaviest music that they could make at this time. For instance, the album does not start out slowly and end on a high note, or vice versa, the album simply hits the ground running and does not let up with the exception of one lonely ballad. In spite of some fan fall-out over the drumming expertise on Metallica's Death Magnetic, there is plenty of hard-hitting rhythm to bang your head to.

Love them or hate them, Metallica's Death Magnetic will not be soon forgotten.
