Meteor Shower Viewing Spots in Burnsville, Minnesota

Cassie B. Adonoson
When you live in the city, it can be hard to see any meteor showers. City lights dim out a lot of the beauty of the stars. While you may want to see meteor showers, or just stars in general, you don't necessarily want to travel way out of the city to see them. Living in Burnsville, Minnesota, I have that problem frequently. Burnsville is a southern suburb of the Twin Cities, so there are lots of lights around. You have to know where to go, and maybe be willing to drive just a few minutes. If you are willing to do that, then you can see some spectacular showers.

Alimagnet Park

This a great place to go, especially if you have animals. Alimagnet park is right off of County Road 11, and has several baseball fields and a dog park. So you can bring your dog for a quick run before it gets dark. If you drive past the baseball fields you will see a large parking lot with plenty of places to park. I would recommend bringing chairs and blankets, because there are only a few picnic benches around, and most of those are under trees. Obviously in the winter you are going to want to bring plenty of warm clothing, and in the summer definitely bring some bug spray. There is a lake nearby, so there are often a lot of bugs. However, you will have a clear view that is free from a lot of the city's lights.

North Park

Now this park will require just a few minutes of driving down to Lakeville, Minnesota. Lakeville is right off of Highway 35. North Park is just a quick drive down Ipava Ave. This park is often used for soccer matches, so there are tons of soccer fields, which means wide open spaces. Parking is pretty easy here as well. There is a huge lot, and as long as there isn't a soccer match, you'll have plenty of room to park your car. This is another park where you have to bring chairs and/or blankets because there may only be one or two picnic benches and tables around. But the park is located in a residential area, so you will be able to see a lot of the sky with out any obstructions.

County Road 11 parks

There are several parks along County Road 11 that you can watch the stars. The road runs along a residential area, so you can see a lot of the sky. Parking depends on the park, but often the parking is limited in these areas. You can't park along County Road 11, but you can park in the residential side streets. Obviously you are going to have to bring chairs, and appropriate clothing. But most of these parks are only about five or ten minutes from the city, so you can see a great show without traveling very far!
