Methods for Cleaning and Polishing Stainless Steel

Steven W. Easley
Cutlery and cooking surfaces in many modern kitchens are made of stainless steel. It's attractive and easy to clean, but it isn't stain proof. According to an article posted on www.doityourself.com there are several simple and affordable ways to clean and polish stainless steel. Many of these techniques can be accomplished with stuff you more than likely already have in your kitchen or pantry.

Water: Wipe your stainless steel appliances, surfaces or cutlery with a warm damp cloth then simply dry with a separate cloth before water beads have time to dry. You can use a shimmy cloth to dry and buff the surface at the same time.

Glass Cleaner: You can use glass cleaner on non-food surfaces to brighten stainless steel. A glass cleaner with ammonia works well to remove old water marks and grime. Once you've cleaned the surface rinse the area with warm water and towel dry.

Vinegar: Use white or cider vinegar to clean stainless steel cutlery, cooking surfaces and food preparation areas. Vinegar has a deep cleaning quality that removes water marks and caked up grime. A mixture of olive oil and club soda can be used in the same fashion.

Specialized Cleaners: Some commercially sold specialty cleaners contain harsh chemicals designed to clean heavily scratched and tarnished items. Always use these cleaners in a well ventilated area and wear a protective filtered mask. Prior to cleaning a stainless steel surface, apply some of the cleaner to a sample area to test for possible discoloration. There are some cleaners which are not recommended or safe for use on items or surfaces used in food preparation. Cleaners which are safe will be labeled as "food safe."

Only use soft cloths to clean and polish stainless steel because the surface will scratch easily. Never use scrubber pads or steel wool and avoid cleaners that contain chlorine because they can actually damage stainless steel. Don't use abrasive cleaners on stainless steel because they can dull and scratch the finish.

These few simple and inexpensive tricks can help return the stainless steel surfaces in your kitchen to their original luster. To help keep that brilliant shine longer dry any spilled water off your stainless steel as soon as possible. Families who spend meal time together are reportedly happier and with a beautiful kitchen that shines creating wonderful meals with your family will be even more of a pleasure.
