Mexi Casa Restaurant in California - Dining That's Good for Your Wallet

Not Pretty and Not Fancy, but Great Mexican Food at Low Prices

Mexi Casa is a little family owned restaurant in Anaheim, California. It's not a big place nor is it fancy. Actually, if you blink you'd easily pass up this restaurant. It's been in Anaheim since 1965 and as the name implies serves up Mexican food.

The restaurant décor looks like nothing has been changed since 1965. Inside it's on the dark side partially due to lighting or lack thereof and partially due to the décor. There are 3 dining rooms, the two rooms to the right of the main entrance have more of a homey feel to them, and feel a bit more like being in a sit-down restaurant. The other dining area to the left of the main entrance feels a bit "cold." Not cold in temperature, but in ambiance. This room is very plain with white floor tiles. It's just not a very appealing room. However, you'll forgive the less than spectacular atmosphere once you see the prices on the menu.

Mexi Casa services up full Mexican meals all for less than $5.00. The under $5.00 price tag will get you the entrée, refried beans, and Spanish rice. The assortment is fairly decent. Nearly all the meals are two-item combos. You can order meals like a taco and enchilada, taco and tostada or tamale and enchilada, and many others. In addition to the combo meals they also offer "starters." A cup of abondigas soup (meatball soup) costs $1.00, and a garden salad with your choice of dressing is $1.60. There are other starters like taquitos or quesadillas. Diners are also given a bowl of chips and salsa for no extra charge.

My favorite meal is the tamale and enchilada plate. The tamale is filled with ground beef. The outer "shell" of the tamale is the perfect consistency. You don't feel like all you're eating is cornmeal. The enchilada is filled with cheese. You can order beef or pork for an additional dollar. The plates are oval and look to be about 12" long by about 8" wide, and are filled with food. Many diners end up getting a box for their leftovers because the portions are very ample. Another thing I really about Mexi Casa is that they serve the food on very hot plates, as in hot enough to burn you. I like this because it keeps your food hot through your entire meal.

If you decide to dine at Mexi Casa for lunch, you'll save about $1.00 off their already low prices. A meal that would normally cost $4.75 is only $3.75 for lunch. You are allowed to take home leftovers from lunch, but no to go orders are allowed at the low lunch price.

Beverages are low cost, as well. Soft drinks are .70 cents per glass, but there are no free refills. If you're in the mood for a glass of beer, these cost $1.35. However, the glasses are very petite. I would guess they are about 8 ounces. You can get a pitcher of beer for $5.00, and it's a decent sized pitcher most likely good for two or three people at the most.

All in all I think Mexi Casa is a great deal. The prices for what you get are more than reasonable and if you're in the area I would suggest dining here for Mexican food rather than some of the major chain fast food places. One more thing to keep in mind, if you dine here they only accept good old fashioned cash. No credit or debit cards are accepted. There's an ATM in the lobby, but you are charged ATM fees by their machine and of course by your bank. So, it's better if you stop at your banks' ATM and bring cash.

Mexi Casa is located at: 1778 West Lincoln Avenue, Anaheim, CA 92801. Phone 714-635-2612
