As I entered "El Azteca", the lifeless feel of this environment left me questioning why I had remained there for even two minutes longer than I should have, but I needed food so decided to stay, against my better judgement.
The waitress was worn, torn, and ready for a second chance at life. She walked over to me in a manner that personified disgust. She seated me with a half painted smile and bright red lipstick.
I looked through the menu and the lack luster options were endless. Should I go for the Stuff Peppers, the Fajitas, or be brave and try the Enchiladas? I went the safe route and ordered a plate of their finest steak meat fajitas.
I must admit that in the time it took for them to bring me my order, I was able to re-alphabetize my cell phone address book, write a short story, and take two trips to the potty.
Finally, my food arrived and I have to confess, there are very little things in life that will make me sit up and cheer, but a steaming hot plate of fajitas is certainly on the list. As I looked at the presentation, there was nothing special about the onions, green and red peppers twisted about my plate tucked underneath the long stretched out fajitas.
Before I began my experience, I asked for 2 fresh jalapenos, which they didn't have and a few slices of lime. I drenched my fajitas with the citric liquid in order to prepare for lift off. I dig in. I taste. I LOVE! There is a lingering garlic taste in the mix that is perfect. At times, garlic is over looked when it comes to cooking but its a staple if you are making Mexican cuisine. The meat was tender and so full of flavor that Rosie O'Donnell would have been on the floor wrestling me for the last bite.
The service I received was less than perfect, but the fajitas will keep me coming back.
