Mexico City - the Cosmopolitan Showcase of Mexico

5 Ways to Savor the History, Culture, Tranquility and Excitement of This Incredible City

Michael Crozier
Mexico City is perhaps the most exciting and cosmopolitan city in Latin America. It's a large city with many districts and neighborhoods to explore, each offering unique and memorable experiences. Here are some great things to do and see in this fascinating city.

National Museum of Anthropology

With its 26 exhibit halls housing extensive collections of arts and artifacts of all periods from all over Mexico, it takes several days to see and enjoy everything the National Museum has to offer. Make the time ... it's worth every minute. The museum also serves as a center for diverse cultural activities, events and exhibits including concerts, films and lectures. Visitors will also want to visit the museum's museum's shop where they can buy reproductions of many of the pieces on display.

Cathedral Metropolitana

Mexico City's "Metropolitan Cathedral" is oldest and largest cathedral in Latin America. With a facade that combines elements of both Baroque and Neo-Classical architectural forms, five naves and an assortment of side chapels, a trip to this Catholic shrine should be definitely on the hotlist of any visitor to Mexico City. Be sure to bring your camera. There are many outstanding photo opportunities.

Museo Mural Diego Rivera

One site that shouldn't be missed is Mexican artist Diego Rivera's most famous mural "Dream of A Sunday Afternoon in the Alameda". Painted in 1947, this giant mural depicts all the famous people, such as Cortez, the artist imagined had walked through the city. The museum was actually built to house and protect this beautiful mural.

Chapultepec Zoo

The Chapultepec Zoo is one of the world's best stocked zoos and is home to many endangered species from all over the world. Animals are displayed in attractive and spacious natural habitats. This has to be the cleanest and most "human-friendly" zoo in the world. It's also extremely clean and has plenty of restrooms, relaxation areas with seating, restaurants and multilingual signs to help you find your way around. Be sure to visit it's world-class aviary, herpetarium, and of course, the Pandas. The zoo is noted for its family of Giant Pandas and it's successful panda breeding program.

The "Floating Gardens" of Xochimilco

Although it's only about 12 miles south of the hustle and bustle of downtown Mexico City, visiting the beautiful tranquil "floating gardens" at Xochimilco makes you feel like you're thousands of miles away. Ride one of the Trajinera, brightly colored boats holding about 12 people, to get a relaxing view of this picturesque place. Don't forget your cameras and sunscreen.

Be Prepared For Traffic Jams

There's something for everyone in Mexico City. It's a place that begs to be explored and experienced from a uniquely up close and personal perspective. But keep in mind one fact of life about Mexico City ... it ranks among one of the most congested cities in the world and has monumental traffic jam problems. Whether you're driving or taking a taxi, be prepared to spend time sitting in traffic, so allow more than ample time to reach your destination. Enjoy your visit!
