While the Border Patrol Agents sit in jail in fear for their lives, the smuggler is sueing the U.S. government for five million dollars. (
Why were the Border Patrol Agents even charged? It has been reported that the Mexican government demanded that the U.S government take action. I thought the United States didn't negotiate with terrorists?
In an all to familiar story, Edwards County Sheriff's Deputy Gilmer Hernandez of Rocksprings, Texas was charged, convicted, and sentenced to 366 days in prison. Gilmer fired shots at the tires of an SUV filled with illegal aliens as the vehicle fled and nearly struck Deputy Gilmer. A stray bullet injured one of the illegals who was stuffed in the tire well. A state investigation was conducted and cleared the deputy of any wrongdoing.
A year later the U.S. Department of Justice reopened the case after receiving a letter from the Mexican government demanding, "that justice be done."
Texas Congressman Ted Poe in defense of Deputy Gilmer stated, "The U.S. Government rounds up six or seven of the illegals and, guess what, prosecutes Deputy Hernandez, claiming he recklessly discharged his firearm and uses the illegals as witnesses against the lawman during a trial." Rep. Poe further comments, "Mr. Speaker, another example of how the Federal Government is more concerned about people illegally invading America than it is about the men who protect America. Once again, our government is on the wrong side of the border war."
You can do your part as an American citizen by signing the petitions at the links below. Tell President Bush that you are outraged that Mexico has been given control over our justice system.

No wonder we lose our faith in government!
Great reporting. I signed the petition. Hopefully we can get stuff like this to stop.
This has frightening implications. I'll want to stay in touch with developments on this one.
wow. the guy tries to bring over 700 pounds of weed and the border patrol guys get in trouble. wow. well written article, though.
Very well written article. Makes me wonder what this country is coming to, lately.
Unbelievable. You'd think that catching and prosecuting the real criminals would take top priority.
I can see why AC rejected this article you have two news items running together. I had to read it twice to comprehend it.
Jeff, I have nothing against any nationality. My problem is with the Mexican Government, not the people. Skewedsolip, I NEVER said the Mexicans were terrorists. The US has a policy to not negotiate with terrorists, so why has the US government allowed themselves to be bullied. The Mexicans governments actions can be loosely interpreted as a terrorist act because of the threats that were said and implied by the Mexican government.
Good idea.
