Meyer's Briggs Personality Types - Are You a Passionate, Emotional Person Who is Misunderstood?
Try Explaining the Details with Logic
There is a guy I've met recently in AC's writer's forum who is the type of guy I like to call a geek wad, and his name is Vincent Summers. Some people might think he is insensitive but I have a feeling, he is just an INTJ or an ENTP.
Now, don't go off on me yet, because the fact of the matter is, for a good part of my career, I've worked with similar geek wads that were engineers or scientists, or number crunchers. The detailed driven people make me nuts but I'm not calling them names; I'm just highlighting a skill they have that I don't! Thinking - who has time for that? I would much rather just go with how I feel about something than waste time thinking why I feel that way. But I have learned that if I want to get my point across, I have to go about it logically with these types. They want the details.
Meyer's Brigg's Personality Tests and Humor Interpretation
Have you heard of the Meyer's Briggs Personality Types? E stands for extroverted, which is opposite of Introverted in the first position of the 4 letter code. N stands for intuitive with its opposite of S for sensing in the second position; T in the third position stands for Thinking and has an opposite being F for feeling. In the 4th and final position in this personality code is P for perceiving with it's opposite, J that stands for judging.
We all have some personality traits that could potentially fall in any of the 8 categories, but people are typically predominately one or two of these combinations. Vincent could tell you how many categories because he's a whiz at math, but I would just say there are many possible combinations.
The following statement was made about a glass of water to the 16 different personality types, and reveals personality types by their sense of humor.
Here are their "humorous thoughts" from the different personality perspectives about a Glass of Water
INTJ thinks: Glass is made from silicon dioxide, heated to a temperature of ...
INTP: The glass _is_ full -- half water, half air!
ENTP: Voila! 0.157 litres of dihydrogen oxide, prepared by micro-gnomes.
ENTJ: Hey! This is a beer glass, not a water glass!
INFJ: This glass of water is a metaphor for my life.
INFP: But look! A crystalline vessel, filled with shimmering, life-giving nectar!
ENFP: Whooeee! Water fight!
ENFJ: There's more than enough for friends to share.
ISFJ thinks: I bet my friend would like to have some water right now ...
ISFP (Holds up glass of water, tilts it from side to side, wiggles finger in it, licks finger, grins slightly, moves on.)
ESFP: There's a glass of water! You know, it's healthy to drink a lot of water! Why, I remember when I was growing up, we used to ...
ESFJ: I can't believe someone would leave this dirty glass out here! Clean up this mess right now!
ISTJ: It's half empty now, and it wouldn't surprise me if it dried up completely.
ISTP: So? It's water. Big deal!
ESTP: You call that a glass of water? Why, back where I come from, ...
ESTJ: Hey! Whose job was it to fill up this glass? (personality types by their sense of humor)
Which personality type are you?
On the Meyer's Brigg's personality test, I go from being a ENFJ to an ENTJ depending upon the day, and my comfort level.
To my very subjective thinking, a geek wad's humor is often based on thinking rather than feeling.
Imagine if someone were to receive a "death threat" in the comments of one of their articles? What would your humorous response be?
If you base your thoughts on thinking rather than feeling, you might suggest they up their life insurance policy. If you base your response on feeling, you might suggest they change the locks and post a guard outside their door. Both are legitimate and potentially funny responses, based upon the person's perception of the situation and how they think, including their personality traits.
Sometimes we learn to cross the line and we adapt
I'm kind of in between-er on the emotional aspects of life; it depends on the day for me, some days I go with my feelings and other days I go with thinking. The more tired I become, the more rational thoughts go out the window.
The bottom line for me (and let me make it clear, that that's all I really care about) is that I have learned that personalities do play a huge role in how we react to people and whether or not we can "understand" each other's humor or even responses to our comments
As people advance in life and in their careers, they can learn to adapt their personalities, and learn to "read" these personalities, improving their roles as leaders or managers, or team players. As evidenced in my article "Are you a Manager or a Leader, it is not only the personality characteristics but the degree of those characteristics that affect how we interpret other people's words and actions.
I have learned that in order to smooth the waves, sometimes we have to modify our delivery in order for others to understand the punch-line or get our message. If you want to take a free online personality test, try here.
Being a producer and trying to move those engineering thinking types along - it takes all types
I'm a marketer - a lover of the 'could-be', rather than the 'should-be'. Take me on a roller coaster ride, and I'm in heaven. Show me the stars and I want to shoot for them. I use grandiose terms such as everybody, nobody and someday. A half of something could be anywhere between a quarter and three quarters. I say, ' c'mon, loosen up why don'tcha? It's close enough!'
If you're the logical type and take what I say seriously, or literally - I will drive you crazy. I'm a producer, a type A doer, who always has a plan A, B, and C, and I only worry about those when I run into a brick wall. I have huge dreams, and I get there often out of sheer will and determination, not my smarts.
Thinking is what I do when I'm in trouble, but instinctual action is my first line of defense. If I later find out I made a mistake, oh well, oops. But I have made many engineers look good on paper, I have been able to sell what they designed, and service the customer base in honor of their work. It takes all types, none is either good or bad.
So, Vincent, my fellow friend and AC writer is a geek wad engineering type who analyzes things like ion's and protons, and I'm a girl with rose- colored glasses, that just likes to see the world in a new light, preferably bright and sunny with few details. "C'mon, give it to me - show me the light" - "Ahhhh. There that's better. Thank you very much."
If you haven't met Vincent Summers, and if you can appreciate the engineering geek-wad type thinking, you might actually enjoy his humor. I can tolerate it, and once in awhile, he even makes me laugh, particularly when I can look at things logically, using the thinking rather than the feeling side of my personality.
Of course, if you are more into the mindless humor, or abstract thoughts that make you think, then feel free to follow me. I might not make you laugh, but some of the people I've met along the way, certainly will.

A glass of Water and personality types
Author's note: Before I published this, I did get Vincent's approval to use his name in this example because I felt bad using the term 'geek wad', but it is meant affectionately and to make a point about the different personality types that we all have an affinity too.
His reply to me was, "This was too technical for him but I could "fire away"; and that just made me laugh and laugh. Is Vincentism a word yet? If not, we might want to explore the option. Hope you enjoyed my quirky humor. What's that glass look like to you?
